Hello,

This probably seems like a pretty obvious question but does the speed and power of a computer make a lot of difference to the time taken to convert files. I have at the moment a Compaq Presario laptop withabout 512 Ram but and the conversion time for a DVD into MPEG4 XviD is I think longer than the video itself. If I were to get a new computer for general work as well what is the mst important aspect. Is it processor speed, RAM or what.

Thanks

Jim

Processor(s) speed is way more important. RAM plays a part to, but large amounts won't help since video conversion only requires loading a few frames at a time.

If you go for a multicore system then you will want to switch to XviD 1.2cvs if you haven't already.

Hi again,

One thing I forgot to ask last time. If I want to build up a collection of converted movies on my hard drive and be able to drag and play them on my Nokia N80 and also any other MP4 player i.e.Archos, is MPEG4 XviD good enough image to play on the latter(Archos)? Also can it be played on a PSP easily. It would be really simple in that case to just have converted movies converted to just MP4 XviD for general use. Thanks in advance. Jim

PSP I believe supports SP only, so as long as you stick to that you should be ok. Also supports AVC though, but then your phone and Archos probably don't. There is also the problem of resolution constraints. Probably quite low for the phone.

my last system was a P4 3.2 presscot 1 gig 667 ram and it took 3 to 5 hours to rip to insane quality DivX with super dvd ripper 2.39. just built another using core 2 duo 2.4 e6600 clocked to 3.29 2 gig 800 ram and it now takes only 1 to 1.5 hours. I would assume any system built around core 2 would greatly decrease ripping to DivX times.
