I am a foreign language teacher. I want to take a DVD that has no subtitle, and then write and add subtitles. I can rip the DVD with DVD Shrink and obtain a VOB file, but then what? What program should I use? Anything good that's also inexpensive? Thanks for the help.

Subtitle Workshop is free software that will let you create a text subtitle file for a video file (.mpeg, .vob). If your DVD has no subtitle file at all then it will be a bit labor intensive. You'll have load your video into Subtitle Workshop and type in the subtitles and sync them with the dialogue.

When your subtitle file is finished you would then would re-author a new DVD with that subtitle file. You could use IFOEdit, Muxman or whatever DVD authoring software you like.

Thanks a lot. Can I ask you one more question? What if the movie already has subtitles, but with so many inaccuracies that I want to "overwrite" them with my own? Would I use the same programs that you mentioned?

Yes, if the movie already has subtitles then it will be much easier. You can rip the existing subtitles from the DVD into a text file. Then you will have the language translation as well as the timings of the subs/dialogue. Having the timings of the subs will save you lots of time.

All you would have to do then is just to edit that text file to change the text of the translation. The basic software would be the same except for the addition of software to rip the subs from the DVD to begin with. Use Subrip for that.

Then edit the text subtitle file that Subrip creates. Then reauthor the new DVD with your edited subtitle file.
