I'm fairly new to hacking the psp. This is what I have.
I have a 2.71 psp. Currently this is what I use:
I have HENC.
I also have Devhook version 0.4x.
I also have the UMD Emu v0.8c.
I'm trying to run an iso. The version with the F0 and F1 folders that go in the root of the memory stick. This version is supposed to allow you to save your game data.
First thing i do is do the Henc. After the screen flashes blue, I go into devhook .4x.
UMD select: selected game iso (for example: tokobot.iso)
UMD Select: image + anyumd
Firmware: 1.50
CPU Clock: 333/166
Boot select: reboot XMB
UMD SFO Version: 2.xx to 2.00
These are my settings. After this, I select start.
So this takes me back to the main screen with a message saying game could not be started.
So next, I go into UMD emulator.
These are my settings:
cpu/bus speed: 333/166
iso emu mode: system menu
disctype iso: game
disctype umd: game
updater icon: remove
use boot.bin: on
regioncode override: off
flash0: off
flash1: off
Next I select the tokobot.iso.
I'm taken back to the main screen. I select the UMD icon. The problem is, I'm getting a message to update my software.
What am I doing wrong? I'm not sure if I'm using devhook properly. When I select fw other than 1.5 or 2.71 flash in devhook, my psp turns off. My psp's fw switches back to 2.71 when I do a hard reset.
Also, in order to use the umd emulator version .08c, I have to be in 1.5, right? So I need to use devhook to get to 1.5, is that correct?
I got other iso's to work using direct load on the umd emulator, but using system menu gives me problems.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Here's what you do man... first you would need a umd to run an iso.
Start your psp make sure you dont have any umd on your drive then go to your sub photo menu start HEN_C then it restarts rite? After restarting put your umd to your umd drive then start devhook for 2.71.these are the setting you need to put in,UMD select(select an iso Image+UMD),FIRMWARE 2.71,Clockspeed 222-111 hit start on the menu an then your good to go...NOTE your ISO's goes to your ISO folder)
Usual questions
man it freezes(it is normal because this program is not yet stable)just repeat the process until you master this program.
Where do i find the IMAGE+UMD selection(This is found if you click on your iso to options should appear 1.IMAGE+UMD 2.NO-UMD(This is for 1.5 version games)
helpfull?
glad to serve you as they have served me well...

Ok I tried putting in fw 2.71 and also 2.71(flash) in devhook. Under umd select, I enter the game iso(for example tokobot.iso) UMD mode is set to image+anyumd. Check.
When I try entering 2.71 in devhook, mp psp turns off. That's not right, is it?
When I enter 2.71(flash), it takes me back to the main menu. I select the umd icon. It has the game icon I selected. So when I click on it, i get a game error 80020148. The game won't start....I know the iso is good because I can play it using fastloader or the umd emulator. I just can't save it though.
Also I notice when I enter 2.71(flash) in devhook, there's no umd emulator showing up on the main menu. I guess it only shows up when I select fw 1.50. The umd emulator will only show up if I select fw 1.50, correct?
Any more suggestions? I'm stumped.
I'm thinking about going the 2.71 se-b route. Or is it se-b"? se-b3? Any thoughts on this? Do a lot of newer iso's work with this? Are the risks worth the gain? If I follow the instructions exactly to a t, is there still a chance of bricking my psp? Just curious. Thanks.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, I also turned on the Flash0 and Flash1 in the UMD emulator. Still nothing.
Also, the only way I can get into the UMD Emu v0.8c. is to enter fw 1.50 in devhook. By entering 1.50 fw, I can't play tokobts under system menu because it asks me to upgrade my fw.

Get 2.71SE-C, every iso I've got works on that. If your psp is 2.71, make sure it ain't a TA-082 motherboard before you try to install the custom firmware.

Yeah, I got the psp when it first came out. It was a 1.5. So I'm sure I don't have the TA-082.
I have 2.71 fw right now. Do I have to downgrade to 1.5 fw?
In order to to the se-b or se-c, do I have to start with se-a?
What's the best route? Just curious.
I found this tutorial to do the process:
http://www.psp-hacks.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=50612
I need the best and easiest one to understand. Is this it? What did you guys use? Also, did any of you have any problems at all? I just want to know what I'm getting myself into.
Thanks.

SE-C, currently on the homepage of psp-hacks.com is a stand-alone install, so once you've downgraded to 1.5, just download that. The guide looks alright, but only deals with ChaosZero's auto-installer which does not include SE-C the latest and greatest version. As the SE-C rar file doesn't come with the istructions to install SE, i've copied this from the readme in SE-A...It's pretty self explanatory.
Creating the DXAR file
----------------------
- Inside NEWINSTALL\PSP\GAME you will see 4 folders. Copy seupdmaker and seupdmaker% to /PSP/GAME/
- Get the official 1.50 and 2.71 sony updaters in the seupdmaker folder with the names "150.PBP" and "271.PBP".
- Run the program. This program won't write to the flash, it will just create a file called DATA.DXAR in the
same directory (seupdmaker).
- Once that you have done this, you can save the DATA.DXAR file to skip this step in the future.
Flashing 2.71 SE
----------------
- Copy the files NEWINSTALL\PSP\GAME\271seflasher and 271seflasher% to /PSP/GAME.
- Copy the generated DATA.DXAR file at 271seflasher directory.
- Run the flasher. If your battery is less than 75%, the program will show the error saying that
and will return to the XMB.
- If you have enough battery, the program will continue and will show an agreement. Press X to accept
it and flash the custom firm, or R to cancel and exit to the XMB.
- If you accept, the program will flash the custom firmware. DONT shutdown the psp and DON'T
quit the memory stick.
- After finished, you psp will be rebooted to XMB... of 2.71SE-C

To downgrade to 1.5, do I need to use the generic downgrader(updateflasher)? I have a question about the readme file.
"This tool enables a 2.71 running HEN C to downgrade to any version from 1.50-2.70 or to
reflash the own 2.71.
Theoretically, TA-082 users could downgrade to 2.70/2.60/2.50.
Ta-082 users: DO NOT TEST anything below 2.50.
This downgrader is safer, faster, and a lot easier to use than the previous downgraders.
It also makes a clean firmware install, since this time there is a format of flash0
(just like sce updaters do).
Instructions:
------------
- Copy the contents inside MS_ROOT to the root of your memstick.
- Get the EBOOT.PBP of the update you want to install, and copy it with the name of "UPDATE.PBP" to
/PSP/GAME/UPDATE
- Run the program.
And done."
I understand the first part about copying the contents to my ms.
For the second part, I download the 1.5 eboot, basically 1.5 fw from any source. For example, is this what I need? http://dl.qj.net/PSP-Firmware-1.50-File-.../163/catid/163.
Then put it in an update folder in psp/game/update and name it 150.pbp? Do I really have to rename it, or do I put it in the folder as is?
Unplug the usb, and then run the 1.50 update from the game folder on my psp?
After I run the update, what will happen? Will the psp restart or what? Will I have 1.50 at this point? Even when I turn my psp off? Where does the henc come in? Did I miss anything?
Thanks so much. Sorry for all the questions. I'm a noob who doesn't want to brick my psp.
Thanks Rhazel for the tips on the se-c subject. I'll have a few questions on that as well. Sorry. I want to make sure I know what I'm doing when I downgrade to 1.5 from 2.71 first. I want to say thanks to everyone else that is helping me out as well.

That link is the right thing you need to download yes. You copy the Eboot.pbp to your game folder and rename it to UPDATE.pbp (NOT 150.pbp!) and run the program. It will do it's thing, restart and you'll have a 1.5 psp. I have used the update flasher 4-5 times before and it worked a treat everytime.

There's already an eboot.pbp file in the update folder. Is there supposed to be this one and the "UPDATE.pbp by the time I'm done.
This is what's in my update folder:
1.update.pbp
2.eboot.pbp (not sure if I was supposed to replace this one with my eboot I copied)
3.libpsardumper.prx
4.decryptprx.prx
5.extprxs.pbp
Does this look right?
When I unplug the psp and go the game folder, it says:
psp update x.yz.
Is this what I want?
Thanks.

Yes this is what you want. That eboot.pbp is what tells the psp that the 1.5 eboot that you are putting in there is a higher firmware than the one you have. You need that. Just go to the updater icon in the game folder (Power has to be plugged in)

DAX found a way to incorporate parts of the 1.5 kernel into the 2.71 firmware. It looks like 2.71 (internet browser, AVC playback etc.) but contains a new folder (ms0:/psp/GAME150) This uses the 1.5 kernel and can run just about any homebrew you have on 1.5. It also makes iso's show up in the game folder and eliminates the need for a umd in the drive...that's right...NO-UMD NEEDED! It has a Recovery menu that will re-flash a partially bricked psp. and shitloads of other stuff that i can't be bothered saying. I highly recommend you get it though.

Cool. You've been so helpful. Before I downgrade, I have a few questions on the se-c. My questions will be bolded:
Creating the DXAR file
----------------------
- Inside NEWINSTALL\PSP\GAME you will see 4 folders. Copy seupdmaker and seupdmaker% to /PSP/GAME/
- Get the official 1.50 and 2.71 sony updaters in the seupdmaker folder with the names "150.PBP" and "271.PBP".
I should actually name them 150.PBP and 271.PBP, right?
- Run the program. This program won't write to the flash, it will just create a file called DATA.DXAR in the
same directory (seupdmaker).
When I run the program, do mean to exit usb mode and go to my game folder on my psp menu? Then activate something? What do I click on exactly?
- Once that you have done this, you can save the DATA.DXAR file to skip this step in the future.
Huh? Isn't that file going to be saved in the (seupdmaker)file?
Flashing 2.71 SE
----------------
- Copy the files NEWINSTALL\PSP\GAME\271seflasher and 271seflasher% to /PSP/GAME.
- Copy the generated DATA.DXAR file at 271seflasher directory.
The DATA.DXAR file is in the seupdmaker file, right? Copy it into the 271seflasher folder?
- Run the flasher. If your battery is less than 75%, the program will show the error saying that
and will return to the XMB.
Do I exit usb mode at this time too? Do I go to my game menu? What do I do here?
- If you have enough battery, the program will continue and will show an agreement. Press X to accept
it and flash the custom firm, or R to cancel and exit to the XMB.
- If you accept, the program will flash the custom firmware. DONT shutdown the psp and DON'T
quit the memory stick.
- After finished, you psp will be rebooted to XMB... of 2.71SE-C

1) Yes, you should name the 1.5 updater eboot 150.pbp and 271.pbp for the 2.71 update.
2) Yes. Exit usb mode, go to your game menu and run the program. It should be called "Update maker" or "DXAR Maker"...something along those lines. I don't have my psp with me, so i can't say exactly. If you go into the wrong thing it doesn't matter...nothing damaging will happen.
3) That just means you can save the DXAR file if you want to use it later...as in if you downgrade again...then want to upgrade to SE again, you dont have to make the DXAR file again.
4) Yes. Copy it to the 271seflasher file
5) That just means that your psp has to be almost fully charged to prevent your psp turning off halfway through the update and bricking your psp. If it's not, the program will tell you and just return to the menu (XMB) of your psp.

I tried downgrading by clicking on the psp update ver x.yz in my game folder.
It restarts and shortly I get a message saying game could not be started.
I'm still in 2.71. Did I miss something? Do I need a umd in the drive?

My psp is also plugged in. Hmmm. Do I need to do anything with henc first? The readme in the updateflasher mentions it, but as far as instructions, nothing.

you need to downgrade to 1.5 first.
Go Here ----> http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/827
It's a tedious process...but the benefits are definitely worth it. All you have to do is rename the 1.5 eboot to UPDATE.pbp and copy into the ms0:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE folder along with the update flasher above. Then run it in HENC mode....HENC must be activated!!

Cool. So after I start henc, do I have to go to devhook to set my firmware to 1.5?
Or do I just go to the update x.yz icon after the screen goes blue and restarts?
Thanks. I think I'll call it a night and try again tomorrow.
Btw, I just signed up on xfire. My username is sam060. Maybe I'll try to get a hold of you there. That's if I figure out how to navigate the site. Is ther instant messaging there? Looks like I might have to download something? Dunno...
Thanks again rhazel. I feel I'm really close. lol!
Cheers!

K. added you ;) As soon as you go into henc go to the update icon, then sit back and wait for it to do its thing. Once finished you'll have a 1.5 psp.
