i've used Nero in the past, but haven't reinstalled it yet after a reformat and thought I'd try img burn with ripit4me. I followed the directions on one of the posts, (I think I see where I may have goofed) but decrypter automatically kicked in and burned it before I had a chance to open imgburn.

My questions . . . the dvd seems to work ok, why wouldn't i use dvddecrypter to burn it instead of imgburn? I'm sure there is a reason!

I noticed these are iso files that decrypter and imgburn use instead of the kind that Nero burns. What is the difference (or point me to the page, i can't find it) and is one better than the other to burn?

i posted earlier asking for advice on the "trial" of the new Nero, someone had said to use my Nero 6 serial #, but the website said that won't work (the serial # isn't on the envelope, so I'd have to install it and uninstall it and reinstall the 7 again, which I am scared to do too much reinstalling since my computer is reformatted and running good)

any advice?

Hello.

Ripit4me uses DVD Decrypter by default for burning. There is nothing wrong with DVD Decrypter at all. I still use it all the time for both ripping and burning. ImgBurn is an updated version of DVD Decrypter by the same author/programmer. Essentially he was threatened legally and stopped development of DVD Decrypter because of the decryption part of the program. He took the burning part of the DVD Decrypter program and called it ImgBurn and kept development on that part.

DVDs according to standards set forth are comprised of a series of video files, VOBs, along with an info file, IFO, and backups, BUPs. This content also can be compiled into a digital image of the 0s and 1s that will be represented on the DVD when burned, termed an ISO or image file. Nero and ImgBurn will both accept a folder of video files for compiling and burning to a DVD. Both will also burn an image file as well. DVD Decrypter will only burn image files.

To make a long story short, there is no need to substitute ImgBurn for DVD Decrypter in your case unless you really want to do so. There is no reason to necessarily reinstall Nero unless there is some function of Nero you really need to use, unless of course you simply want to do so.

ImgBurn has some features not found on DVD Decrypter but unless you need them, don't worry about it and continue to use DVD Decrypter for your backups.

You can always set DVD Shrink in Ripit4me to generate an ISO Image File as the target output after clicking the Backup! icon instead of burning directly to DVD with DVD Decrypter. You could then burn that image file with ImgBurn if you wanted.

Nope born2ride -decrypter can burn too.
You have the last version too.
Just rip in iso mode and you can pick the .mds file it creates to burn.
Or if you have an iso file it will burn that too.
ImgBurn has the build mode option to burn non iso files whereas decrypter doesn't.

@someoneth

All of them 3 (ImgBurn, DVD Decrypter and Nero) will auto-burn via DVD Shrink if any of them is checked via "Target Option" from DVD Shrink. Some people prefer ImgBurn over Nero or DVD Decrypter and vice versa.

However, I prefer DVD Shrink to import my ready to burn VIDEO_TS into my HD once it's completed. Upon completion, I'll manually burn it with either Nero Burning Rom or ImgBurn afterward. If my project was done with an ISO image, then I'll definitely prefer ImgBurn instead of Nero.

In contrast, it's all about preference, so the choice is yours.

Best of luck to all!!

Yep that one is for file mode but iso is just as easy.

Go to mode and pick iso>read instead.
Decrypter will create an iso and a mds file.

But remember no compression is done so if you need it to be compressed to fit to a single layer disc then you'll need to open the iso in Shrink (file>open disc image)and compress.
You could then have Shrink output another iso (pick the iso option under select backup target) to burn with decrypter.

Now to burn just go back to mode>iso but this time pick write. You can pick the mds file or if you ran it thru Shrink pick the iso that Shrink created.
Select you burner under destination (if not already selected) and burn speed. Click the burn button and your off :)

Here's a more detailed guide.
