I just bought a SONY DRX 830U external drive, It works great but I have a question. It has a power switch on the back, do I leave on all the the time? and do I leave it on when I restart my PC or do I have to stop it from the toolbar? I don't want to damage it that's why I'm asking. Also there's a firmware update available I'm not having any problems with it so I don't know if I should update it or not.

Thanks

When your PC is off, turn your drive off. Also, treat it as any other USB device, stop it before rebooting.
Also, until you come across disks your burner cannot read, there is no need to update the firmware Ine My Opinion. Some people will say that you should update your firmware the minute there is an update out, but that's not necessary at all.

There may be a ton of other fixes with a firmware update, outside of just media. So, instead of making an incorrect statement like you did, you might consider checking the manufacturer's website to see what fixes the firmware update contains, and make your decision from that information.

I just looked it up "Improvements: Reliability improvements with 8cm DVD-R DL" What's 8cm? is that regular DVD-R's? Also this one just came out a few days ago, do I have to use the other then this one?

So, instead of making an incorrect statement like you did,
It's not incorrect at all. In your opionion, it is "unsatisfactory". There are not many other things that it improves, besides more media support and better writing strategies...

Also, you have not added anything of value to the thread, so why post? Just to pick up someone that has actually bothered to help the person in question?

@tj1182: 8cm DVDs are for DVD Camcorders. It's not Normal media, and DL is Dual Layer, meaning there are two sides on which data can be brunt, on that disk.
