Hey all I am new here, so just wanted to thank you all in advance for your help.

I have two Towers an onld HP pavillion 8665c, a emachines T2862. Both are on their last legs.
I have been toying with the idea of building a pc for a long time now, and was wondering....
Can I reuse one of the towers and just put new motherboard, processor, etc inside thus skipping the cost of a new tower, obviously replacing the power supplies. I am sure it is possible to reuse the hardware i.e. dvd roms, burners, etc. But can I use the same HD? I have a 60 and 20 gb and don't forsee the need for any larger ones.
I have ordered a catalog from pcDirect, they seem to have good prices, are there any other good sources for components?
Thanks again for the advice.

Newegg.com and Zipzoomfly.com are the two best site that I have used.

You can probably use the towers you have now.

That is good news. Through the University of Wyoming I bought XP Professional for an amazing 15.00.
What are your thoughts on these two processors and mobo's which one would you go with?

Intel Pentium Dual Core 2 DUE Processor E6600 at 2.4GHz, 1066 MHz FSB, 4 MB L2 Cache, PCG06
Aopen Intel I945 Black Limited Power Master 1066@775 Motherboard, The motherboard support PCI E Video Card, Combo with Heat sink and Fan. With 512MB DDR PC 3200.

OR

ECS KN1 SLI Lite (V1.0A)
AMD Athlon? 64 3800+ X2 Dual-Core Processor

This thread is awsome thanks everyone!

As much as it pains me to say this (being a long time AMD user) go with the intel, their dual cores are better right now, and the athlon64x2 isn't that great for a lot of things. Regarding the case, and reusing it, sometimes that can be done, if the motherboard for the OEM pc is a standard form factor, however with decent cases out there at low cost such as: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/...1698789&CatId=0
You're not really saving THAT much money, and you're sure to get one that will work with the board that you settle on. The rule of thumb that I use when comparing cases put most simply is this: If you're going cheap, look for one with pictures and if the metal inside is shiny and reflective, it will be thin and flimsy. If you're going with higher priced that doesn't always apply, but there are plenty of great deals on great cases out there. Building is a very enjoyable process and you can't beat the sense of accomplishment when you can sit back and say I BUILT MY COMPUTER. Have fun.

Hi, I am also considering to purchase/build a new PC due to the old one being 6 years old and completely outdated.

It was upgraded 2 years ago but some of the parts seem to be malfunctioning, having spent around £200 just on upgrades- I was thinking of selling the PC for parts.

My current PC specs are;

AMD 2.08 XP Processor
512MB Memory
256MB graphics card (ATI 9200 Series)
Creative 32 bit around card
DVD Writer 16x Dual Layer (Liteon)
CD Writer 52X (Liteon)
Asrock Motherboard (Not sure which one, possibly 8x AGP?)
Digital TV tuning Card
Windows XP Pro SP2

Any help would be appreciated.

I used a site to build a PC.

I chose the most up-to-date spec i can buy.

http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/index.php?page=results

I will get the monitor separately from this site.

http://www.misco.co.uk/productinformatio...WIDE%20TFT.htm#

Let me know if the spec is any good.

Sounds good, but as we said before the Intel C2D is a better processor... And although I've been an AMD fan for years, unless they fix it, my next build I make is going to be intel. Other than that your system looks good to me.

Hey

yes you can use the same tower you just need to make sure if you buy a new motherbaord it will fit into it, you can use all the parts from the old computer , your hard drives will work and will keep the data on them so whe you put your new HD in to the new comp you wont need to install your OS again as it will already be there, DVD & CD drives are fine:

if your gonna build one, you wanna get yourself :

A Gigaboard
A Gig Or more Ram
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU

And anything else you wanna throw in there, that'll be a good comp and should run fine

Hope ive helped :)

Alright did some searching... Seems that UK based computer shops charge more comparatively for cases for the most part (than the us shops do), but I have a couple suggestions for you that will be high quality and fit your budget.
If you want something flashy but not over the top then this one would work nicely:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-065-AN
however if you're wanting a more standard case type, this would work better:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-067-AN
yes I do realize they're both the same brand, but as far as quality brands go, these were the lowest priced ones I saw for UK shops.
Also, check out other items, that seems to be a good shop, and there may be something else that jumps out at you.

Cheers for the help guys.

I'll think I'll go with the "Antec Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming case" for £75

The price is a little bit of a downer, but i'll save up a little bit more and get this one.

Ok folks! Thanks for the insight and advice in building my PC. I took a deep breath, and just purchases a new Intel core 2 Duo E6600. Now lemme dig once more into your wealth of grey matter and ask ya'll yet another question. Which mobo would you suggest I was thinking Asus. I hwve been reading some decent reviews on their products, but wanted to consult with my new friends. Hit me back and let me know your thoughts. As always, thanks

Asus is definitely one of the best IMHO, so I would say by all rights go for it, but by all means, please listen to any other suggestions and make your own decision. The following site: http://www.tomshardware.com/ does have a lot of good and informative reviews of many products, so see what other people have to say, do your research and have fun with your build.

Ok Thanks everyone for your insight. Here's what I have thus far.

Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 2.40GHz 1066FSB 4MB LGA775
ASUS P5B-VM Socket T (LGA 775) Intel G965 Express Micro ATX.
Looking for a smaller size tower. Something like the cube type, but more rectangular and flat (like the thin ones ppl put on their desk and place their monitor on). My wife says she wants sparkles... I am guessing she means plexi window with lights. Any ideas where to find such a case? What kind of power supply do you think I should be leaning towards?

Mucho Gracias

I wanted to jump in here and get some advice too. I am kind of stealing his initial setup and going from there. I am in the same situation as him, in that I have all the extras (video card, sound card, dvd burner, etc.) I am looking just to beef up my system. So here is what I was thinking:

Intel C2Duo E6600 2.4Ghz CPU $309.99
ASUS P5B-VM Socket T (LGA 775) Intel G965 Express Micro ATX Mobo $125.99
Corsair XMS2 2Gb 240-pin DDR2 SDRam DDR2 800 RAM $280.00
COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 CAC-T05-WW Black Tower $49.99
Antec SmartPower 2.0 SP-500 ATX12V 500W PSU $74.99

Total $840.96

Right now I have a P4 1.6Ghz with 512 ram. I wanted to stay under $1000, but if there are any chages you would make to save money or increase the quality please let me know. Since I am completely new to building a PC, would I need anything else not listed? Fans, cables, whatever? Thanks for the input, and sorry for hijacking your thread.

Ok folks almost there! Here is my set up thus far.

ASUS P5B-VM Socket T (LGA 775) Intel G965 Express Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 2.40GHz 1066FSB 4MB LGA775

OCZ PC2-6400 2GB EL Gold XTC Edition Dual Channel Kit (2 x 1GB)

Thermaltake Mystic RH-D050-2SN ATX/MicroATX Desktop Case
http://www.thermalrock.com/chassis/mystic/mystic.htm

**Question 1: The motherboard specs from newegg states that it used standard DDR2 800/240 pin memory. Out of curiousity I just checed ASUS website and the specs concurs but says that it required 1.8v, but the memory card is 2.0v. Is there going to be compatibility issues?

**Question 2: The pc case as per Thermaltake says that it requires "Standard ATX PSII" PSU and gives no dimensions . What in the hell is a PSII? I have been searching like crazy, but having no luck finding one.

**Question 3: Critique my set up if you would (Still shopping for a decent-middle of the road graphics card)

Thanks again everyone for your help.
