For like a month now constantly when im downloading (Azureus) my speed goes to 0 after 10 min, i can't browse, MSN logs off and on, same with YIM. I call my isp, they say its the touchscreen phones i use, then my speed goes to 4 mbps now, they say there is something wrong with my upstream.

Ok, so its been confirmed its not my modem, im using ADSL, in Canada. Is this my ISP, or something else. And if so, should I call them and tell them that I am downloading off Azureus or should I say something else (legal issues, i guess)? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Got a router? I bet you're crashing it.

Most routers really choke when they get above 200 connections. Some routers choke when they go over 100.

Also, windows XP sp2 limits your available connections to 10, which also causes problems. Search for "lvllord" for the patch that will fix it.

But I hear that it may damage Windows? Are you sure this is the solution?

May "damage" windows? Damage? Hmm.

SP2 damages windows, lol.

The lvllord patch is safe, as far as I know. It's been recommended here about a zillion times. If you're concerned, set a backup point prior to installing it.

As Tom says it's either your router/modem, or another very good possibility is the isp have an upload limit set per month which you are exceeding leading them to throttle your uplink. see http://afterdark13.11.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=85 http://afterdark13.11.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=23
Can you download normally at reasonable speed when this happens? Like a decent sized file (legal?..try a small live linux distro around 50mb http://www.damsmalllinux.org have a good one for test purposes on a fast mirror)
OR..they are detecting what they believe to be "illegal" torrent packet activity and are pulling the plug on you...turn encryption on and use p2p peer protection software (moblock/safepeer etc)
Try different ports, some isp's use certain ports for other things..and there are ports that are used by trojans. see http://www.commodon.com/threat/threat-ports.htm
I had a few weekends in a row of very poor download/upload..normal during the week. Turns out my isp was doing maintenance on the network locally..

If it wasn't for the fact that legal linux distros are put out as torrents I wouldn't help at all with this issue.. Don't tell your isp you are using p2p for anything..it's none of their business what you do...

I like linksys, they're made by Cisco, which is a generally good brand.

I have a WRT54G and it's never failed me. It DOES crash over 255 connections though, but I like it.

D-link's are all right too, stay AWAY from belkin's. I don't personally advocate a router w/o hard plug points (mine's got 4, most routers have 4-8, some have 0, which I don't recommend), but if you're going wireless you need to be at G, n-spec just isn't worth it right now.

The linksys are nice because there are graphical tutorials all over the place on how to use them, and also there are firmware hacks that turn your $60 router into a $600 router.

Make sure the package says ROUTER, not just SWITCH or HUB. It can say router AND switch, but if it only says switch, that's not what you need.

@ aj..You need both http and udp ports forwarded for torrents to work properly. Read the Azureus wiki for good info about configuring routers and other stuff. If you really want to get postal on your isp the best way to stick it too them good time is to get yourself a proper proxy server and forward all your torrent traffic through that instead. They can't and won't be able to detect your torrent activity with a tunnelled secure link.

There are lots of things that can go wrong. Some sites by default block certain ports and clients. Check the rules of the tracker site as well.
Large public sites have a tendency to be very slow these days, and demonoid isn't what it used to be.

Also make sure you aren't saturating your connection by trying to upload faster than the capabilities of your connection. This isn't a figure that can be auto guessed, you need to play with it daily to find the sweet spot..
