Abuzar: You know what's funny? Most Xclio cases actually have really poor airflow. The Coolermaster Mystique isn't too bad, but you can do far better.
Fasfrank: It's funny you should mention Flight simulator. Flight Sim X is one of the most demanding programs you can run on a PC. It's also interestingly enough the most heavily dependent upon CPU power, by about 4 times!

When I got my 900 (and it seems I was one of the first to own one, December 06 I think I bought mine) I thought the looks would be an acquired taste for most people. I like it, but I wasn't expecting it to be as ridiculously popular as its turned out to be. I guess gamers are suckers for a lot of fans. (Bah, my NZXT Lexa has more fans, they're just not as big!)

Yeah if you wanted 4 5 1/4" drive bays. Not that many people use that many of those though.

I still need to get another DVD burner, my old one got Starforced. To prevent that happening again though, I'm going to use a 5 1/4" USB enclosure methinks. Can't be bothered replacing my DVD drives every time I want to play a certain game. I'll probably just grab the GSA-4163BA from my old PC, that served me well enough.

I know its been mentioned, but not talked about in depth so here it goes...
Is there really a reason to build a new machine now, with penryn and phenom so close to release? Reports say they should be compatible with current mobos, but I never upgraded to AM2/ C2D, choosing to learn a little about OCing my 939 Opteron. People like me, and I know theres quite a few around, have to buy nearly everything but a case and drives, and by that point, you might as well so you can have an extra complete machine to use/ sell.
I will be upgrading soon also, and I am trying to figure out if I should buy half (case, memory, etc.)now with the holiday sales sure to happen, then buy the new mobu/cpu combo when it comes out early 2008 I believe.
Sorry for rambling...any thoughts anyone?

Indeed, recent motherboards will support Penryn CPUs on the 775 platform. Not sure about Phenom for AM2 boards.

Phenoms are listed as an AM2+ on the specs sheet at Tankguys.

From Tankguys....
Quote:
AMD Phenom X4 9500 - 4Mb Cache / 2.2Ghz $274.99

Availability is extremely tight on the product. Rough ETA from AMD is the week of November 26th. This date is not guaranteed, and is subject to change.

http://www.tankguys.com/product_info.php...roducts_id=1779
Socket AM2 will support upcoming AMD Phenom processors.

From Wikipedia...
Quote:
AMD confirmed that AM2 processors will work in AM2+ motherboards and AM2+ processors will work on AM2 motherboards. However, due to the lack of support of HyperTransport 3.0 and separated power planes in Socket AM2 motherboards, AM2+ chips will be limited to the specifications of Socket AM2 (HyperTransport 2.0 at the speed of 1 GHz, one power plane for both Cores and IMC). AM2 chips will not benefit from faster HyperTransport and separated power planes on AM2+ motherboards as they do not support them, AM2+ motherboard then fall back to compatibility mode using AM2 specifications.

Intel showed their new quad core, with more 45nm to come soon. Looks like AMD is about to show their quad, with a similar timeline to release the rest of theirs.
I will probably buy everything but memory, mobo and CPU before the end of the year with the rest when they come out.

I went ahead and ordered a 2.2 Ghz Phenom. I'll work up a list of the rest of the stuff and post it. I'm getting this motherboard for it:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16821103203

OMG!!
13 Item(s) ($2,007.87)

This should give the Phenom a fighting chance against E6600/E6850/E6750 PCs. Even if it doesn't outperform them it will still be a nice PC.

I'm not going to place the order yet. I'd really like some comments on the parts before I do.

I wanted to stay below $2500.00. I usually don't buy everything from Newegg, I like to shop around, Newegg is great for making a list though.

I'd like to mention something here...
I'm not a young man, most of you here could be my kids (God forbid!:))
I was promoted recently and also am getting a nice bonus which will help pay for this. What better way to spend money, right?

It probably seems a bit rash, just ordering up a couple of thousand dollars worth of PC parts. I have been planning a Phenom build for a couple of months now so this is as good a time as any to do so.

If you don't believe it will out perform the Core 2 Duo, why not just get one of those?

Also if I had money to burn I would do what you are doing :)

seagate 7200.10 have been said to be in some cases faster then WD raptor, and very close in other tests. also, there is unnoticeable real world difference between them, so why waste your money?

So I decided I'd start out my PC building career by building a less expensive one for my little sister. Her budget is around $600 and I'm hoping to build it for her this Christmas break. I also want to leave things open to further upgrading, if and when she gets the money. A 7 series nvidia graphics card will probably be her first upgrade. But anyways, here's the list. [I know nothing about PSUs...so I just guessed.]

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115031
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134384
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822144417
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106072
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824254001
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811144151
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371005

I'm not going to worry about the OS, keyboard, speakers, mice, etc. Just a reminder - she wants to eventually do some medium gaming. Maybe using a 7600gts. But (as usually is the question), is there any way to make this cheaper, without cutting into quality too much?

@Deadrum33
I would get your memory as long as you are not going the DDR3 route...before the prices go back up...

DDR2 memory prices are unbelievably low right now...it will not last...

@jtan189
I did not see a M/B...

I would go with the Cooler Master Mystique case for $39...a much better case...also look at an Antec Sonata case with a P/S...It might save you a little bit of cash...
Go with some Good memory...PC-6400 4-4-4-12 timing...Crucial or Corsair...skip the Kingston...It will be worth the little bit of extra cash...never skimp on memory...It is probably the single most crucial component of your PC...

@fasfrank
I do not know anything about the M/B you selected so I will not say anything...except...I do Like Gigabytes boards...

I am not a fan of that P/S because of the (4) 18amp rails with a max of 60 amps on the (4) rails...The math just does not add up...
I would look at the New Corsair single rails...or a PC Power & Cooling 750 Quad...

I do not like Patriot memory at all...I would Go Crucial...Corsair...or G-skill...

As for the H/D...I do not think the additional speed of Raptors are worth it...I would go with (2) seagate 250GB or 320GB in Raid...If the M/B supports it...like I said I am not familiar with the M/B...My reasoning behind this is 160GB is not in my opinion enough storage space for O/S...Programs...and Games...The new games take a lot of H/D space...

I would get another 750GB H/D or go with 500GB drives and save a little more...

JM2C...

@abuzar,
I've already got C2Ds so I thought I'd build my first AMD machine. I don't know how it will compare, but I want to find out. It's too late anyway, I already gave them my money for the cpu.

@REAM,
Thank you for the suggestion. Nothing on the list is in stone. I have a four WD Raptors and they are the one HD that has never failed on me. I'm going to run this pair in RAID 0 so I want to make sure they are fast and reliable. I'll try and find some more specs on the Seagate.
I don't need that 750GB Hitachi either. 250 Gb would be enough.

I'm going to wait a few days before buying the list. CPU ship date is unknown at this time so no hurry.
I need more info on the video cards. Are these the 8800GT's I should get??
The choices are extremely limited at this point. I'm hoping to see more brands in stock next week. I'd like to see what becomes available in the ~$260.00 range.
