redmars,

First rule of buying a case is to almost never get one that comes with a power supply. 98% of all power supplies that come with a case are junk! At $89 for both you can almost be assured that this one is junk! A good quality PS alone, would cost that much. Also 400 Watts is a bit short on power these days 500 Watts is about the lowest most people go. Your other choices aren't too bad but I would go with the 1066 memory over the 800 given the prices today.

Rule of thumb with power supplies is if it's cheap, it usually isn't any good. a Cheap PS can cost you more money in the long run, in damage to your motherboard and other things! Trust me, most of us here have been there, done that! LOL!!

Best Regards,
theone

I don't get it, are you building a PC optimal for performance? Why go with a u-atx case? Just get a mid-tower case and a good motherboard. No need to go with a G35 chipset either if you're getting a video card.

abuzar1,

I was thinking of the small case for easy of carrying it. But a mid-tower maybe better. Not many good ATX Micro motherboards for the case.

What is a good motherboard/chipset that is good to look for?

theonejrs,

Yes I read that the power supply was not good.

If in the states you can use the EGG. ;)

mobo: GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775

case: CM Ammo

p/s: Corsair 550-VX

RAM: comparison of products and prices....after MIR all of these are under $60 and have cas4 2 x 1GB sticks. ;)

Just some ideas for you Red... I can't remember exactly what you were needing but here's a start. hth...

I think you would be better off going with a Gigabyte Ga-P35-DS3R, the better cooling does help and it has more features like RAID, which you wanted to do.

redmars,
While I agree with greensman on most of what he posted I would opt for the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R Rev 2.0 for $27 more rather than the DS3L. That $27 gets you 6 Intel Sata 3.0 Gb/s, 2 GigaByte Sata 3.0 Gb/s, Raid, 8 rear USB ports, headers for 4 more USB ports, 8 channel HD Audio that's awsome, compatibility with the new 45nm CPUs, Ultra-Durable, better cooling and a whole lot more. It's what I use, and so far it's easily the best MB I ever owned. As soon as I get some Crucial Balistix Tracer 1066 memory (highly recommended), I can bump my E6750 up another 300MHz to 3.8GHz. You also get the best customer service I've ever encountered in almost 20 years of building computers. They treat you like you matter to them! Great Folks and unbelievable service!

I had a GA-965P-DS3 Rev. 1.33 before that and both tie for the easiest builds and overclocks of my life! I haven't heard one single complaint from anyone that purchased one on my advice, except a couple of Thank Yous! LOL!!

I agree with the DS3R mobo. ;) I forgot that he wanted Raid and all but I was looking at price again which is silly. He should be able to keep this within budget especially around $600 for everything with a couple of changes (cpu for one).

@Redmars,
I think that an E6750 would be good enough for your needs and save $100 plus I think that any of the RAM that I linked to is better than A-DATA.. jm2c... :D
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I've gone kinda crazy on this build but I don't plan on adding anything but a better GPU and maybe some more HDD's at some point. ;P

I agree totally on the E6750. There's very little to be gained with the E6850.

redmars,

Knowing what I know now, I would still opt for 2x1 GB of the Crucial Balistix Tracer DDR26400 memory (The black ones not the gold) as they're the same price. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148076

Check the combo deal on the video card with this card. Both together is only $138.99 after a $35 MIR. here's the video card.

Not a bad deal at all!

Actually I wouldn't get the 8600Gt. If this is going to be a gaming PC then buy a good card, at least as HD 3850.

If you've on a budget, the memory is terrific and the video card is touted as the best budget gamer you can buy! All for $138.98! Pretty tough to beat for the price, and better than average quality too! Your base system would still be the same and you could upgrade the video if needed or wanted to down the road. Hell of a combo for the bucks! And DirectX 10 to boot!

Yeah DirectX 10 is fine and stuff, but the card isn't powerful enough to run those games in directx 10 mode! Unless you're ok with 10F FPS.

Seriously if you're gonna do it do it right. He has a Budget of 1200! That's a very good budget to build a gaming PC. Anyway he has picket out a HD 3870 already which is a terrific card. So just leave the card the same.

Not getting ugly at all. At stock speeds there's not a lot of difference between the two. I certainly wouldn't mind having one, and I'm glad you have one coming as I'm anxious to see what it can do in your hands! The 6850 will overclock higher then the 6750, but I'm a budget conscious guy and would rather save the $100 and use it somewhere else. If money were no problem, I would have the 45nm Qx9650 in mine or in a DQ6! LOL!!

I don't know where you are getting this information but the 8600GT is capable of much better than that. It was just a good combo deal on 2x1GB of fine memory and a better than average gaming card for $138! It may just well have suited his needs. I'll make my own list of components as to what I would build for 1200 with redmars's needs!

EDIT! Here's my list!

Comes to $1,227.59 including tax and shipping -$65 MIR = $1,162.59

That's what I would build for myself with his budget and needs!

EDIT: Sorry to rag on you again but the old 8800GTs sucks now. It's not worth it, especially when a 160 dollar HD 3850 outperforms it at best and is on par at worst.

I'm not upset, except with myself! I should have checked redmars post and I would have seen I missed the $1200 budget. I somehow thought he had $600 to work with. My Stupid! I just edited my post with a list. You won't like my choice of video card but I'm not a big ATi fan! LOL!!

It's not a question of what's better, but the needs of redmars. He had indicated an ATi card so I switched it. I prefer nVidia!

If you bought 3 Fords over the years and had trouble with all of them, the chances are you wouldn't buy a 4th, right? That's how I am with ATi video cards. I've owned 3 and have had problems with each and every one of them The first one I bought died in a couple of months and was replaced by another one that lasted about the same amount of time, The second one, when you went to install the software that came with it, the software couldn't find the card! My last (which we still use in the D-940), a Sapphire X800GTO. Good card but the power thing is always a problem. The molex plug gets hot and eventually the damn thing starts arcing and when you shut it off and turn it on the next day you get an error message, Open it up clean the prongs and inside the female part and squeeze the female pins a little bit and it lasts for months. I was never very happy with all the heat anyway! I've never had a problem with any Nvidia Card except when I bought an XFX 5200GT for the old workstation which had the older 4x AGP Spec and the one Newegg sold me and promised would work, didn't. I went through all kinds of hell getting them to give me the PCI version to replace it, and sent me 3 before I finally blew up. I finally wound up disputing the Credit Card charge and only after Master Card found in my favor did Newegg finally give me the PCI in place of it! I've since found out that if it's a 4x-8x card, it won't work in the older 4x. You need a 2x-4x for that!

I've bought tons of XFX cards for years and have never had a problem so I'm happy with them. When the X800GTO I have now dies, it will be replaced by another XFX! It's a good card but I know with the heat issues and the connection problems, eventually it will die. If it doesn't, that's all right too! LOL!!

Best Regards,
Russ

Well it's not really like a car. It's proven to have better performance for less. What's wrong with that? I've personally never had problems with any video card so I can't comment on the ati vs nvidia thing. I've had three computer parts fail on me. A Nvidia board, a Gigabyte Board, and a WD hdd.

I understand what you are saying but in all fairness I've built over 200 of them so I'm bound to have a larger number of failures than the average person. I tend to stay with what works best for me.

Every computer I build these days gets a Cooler master Cavalier case, a Thermaltake TR2 500W PS, An XFX video card, a Seagate Sata 3.0 Mb/s hard drive, G.Skill memory, a GigaByte or Biostar Tforce (AMD) MB and a NEC/Sony Optiarc DVD Burner. I've found these components to have almost no issues, so I continue to use them unless something better comes along. I sell 40 or so a year and the failure rate of the components is extremely low. Of course if they want something different I accommodate that as well, as long as they are willing to pay for it, they can have whatever they want! LOL!!.

Yeah thats true, but I wouldn't call having three ATI cards as a good chance. I've been through more video cards this year. Sapphire has a very good rating and I think the one you got was a freak accident. Electronics, they have have to have SOME fail.

Seriously if you are ever in the market give the new ATI cards a try.

Here is what I would recommend...Makes a great HTCP build...A little over budget...but with an O/S...and a wireless...Media Center Keyboard...with built in mouse...
It looked like you were going Vista...for the Media Center...and Micro for HTCP...which is why I picked...what I did...
The Motherboard I chose...gives you DDR3 support as well...so you can upgrade to the new memory...once it is affordable...

Lp531,
Dang it now Lp!! LOL!! I had to go back and edit my post because I forgot the MIR! ROFLMAO!!
Seriously, you got some good solid choices there. I just used Newegg for everything figuring anything redmars was interested in, he could research for the best price.

I didn't include the OS either, although it will snow in hell before Micro$oft gets another penny out of me! I have bought and paid for every version of Windows since 3.0 and when I was unable to read the card with the numbers on it because some idiot put the card on the outside of the computer and they got rubbed off, Micro$oft wouldn't do a thing for me in spite of my scanning the Disk and sending the pic to them, along with a copy of the receipt for it. They can kiss my Foot! I'll probably die before Microcrap forces me into vista anyway!

Whatever he does build, it should be a whale of a computer!

Best Regards,
Russ

Besides the GPU (for me at least) all the other components are pretty good for the total money spent. :D

mobo: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3P $153
RAM: Crucial Ballistix TRacers (2 x 1GB) DDR2 1066 $77
GPU: FoxConn GeForce 8400GS $25
CPU: Intel C2D E6850 $268
P/S: Cooler Master RS-850-EMBA $75
Case: Cooler Master RC-690 $55
HDD: 3 x Seagate 320GB 16MB SATA $195 ($65 each)
CPU hsf: Cooler Master HYPER TX 2 CPU COOLER $6
DVDRW: 4 ODD drives @ $30 each $120
CAse fans: various brands and models 3 x $6 = $18

I think that adds up to $992 after MIR. Prices include tax and shipping if applicable and prices were rounded to nearest dollar for my adding pleasure. ;) LIke I've said before the only thing that I want to change is the GPU and maybe add a HDD or two. :D

Whatchu fellas think??

All nice buys...wait till march on upgrading the Video Card...the HD3850 512mb will be $40 cheaper...You should add a TV capture card...you already have the H/D space...

@theonejrs
I thought you'd like the thumb screws I threw in...Just being thorough...
I figured since he was going to have to suffer with Vista...at least he should have a screaming media center for his $$$...
My brother still hasn't got any of the media center extenders in yet...they look like promising technology...for giving a house HD/Video throughout...via wireless...
