I never really looked closely enough at the Coolermaster 690, it's a stunning case, exceptionally well cooled and discretely styled, I'll be recommending it more often in future.

Well thank you sam!!! I have one. :P

Be aware tho.....
the expansion slot retention "clips" are a little to be desired. I used a screw with my GPU. Didn't trust the "clip". ;) AND the P/S is mounted on the bottom of the case NOT the upper rear portion. ;) I actually like the HDD mounts, pretty simple really.... There's more pros/cons but that covers most people wouldn't be able to see. ;)

Greensman: It's funny, the retention clip on my NZXT Lexa is the only naff part about it. I ripped it off, you still get the screw holes underneath so I just use those!
As for the PSU being on the bottom, it's not a bad idea as long as you're careful and drop any screws down there!

As for the P/S being on the bottom, the case allows for the supply to sit in a conventional way; fan facing downward... If you have something like a PC Power & Cooling unit it blows out the back of the case. ;)

I lost my copy of XP so I downloaded a copy with SP3 installed. None of my drivers are working now. Do you guys know of a good edition of XP possibly with performance tweaks? I could just get the normal XP SP2 but i was hoping for a version with some tweaks and such.

Mort81,
Quote:
well I know that most here are pro gigabyte but I am still an asus fanboy. with asus you get what you pay for. I bought one of their flagship mobos (P5W DH Deluxe WiFi) and it has been the best mobo I have ever owned. yea it cost over $100 than other asus mobos (P5N-E for example) but look at what I got. awesome OC'er and trouble free. I also had an asus P4P800 SE which was very popular and an excellent mobo.

As you know, I used Asus motherboards exclusively for many years. My last two were the P4P800 SE and the P5P800 SE and both were excellent motherboards. My disenchantment with Asus started when they tried to nick me $40 for a damaged 775 socket on the P5P800SE, when the pictures I took of it while packing clearly showed that it didn't leave my home damaged. That was followed by 29 days without my computer while they repaired the P5P800 SE, only to get it back not fixed! The fiasco with the P5N-E was just the icing on the cake, yet you personally know that in spite of all of that I was still going to use one for my E4300 build. You are the person who changed my mind about doing that.

Both gigabyte and Asus make good products, but it seems to me that GigaByte gives you more value for your dollar across the board. Asus does make some very fine high end motherboards, slightly better than the GigaByte, but they also cost a bit more. The fiasco with the P5N-E coupled with their terrible customer and technical service convinced me to look elsewhere. The few problems I have had with gigabyte and my dealings with both customer and tech service has made quite an impression on me. The speed with which they handles things and the extent they were willing to go to keep me happy as a customer has more than convinced me that I made the right choice. I think the main difference between the two companies products is in their approach to how far they are willing to go is based more on the cost of the product you purchased for Asus, while Gigabyte seems to be more concerned with you as a customer. They staff their technical service with knowledgeable people who know what they are talking about, so phone time is kept to a minimum They want your business, and by the way they do things, it shows!

That being said, I do apologize for saying Brand X. I shouldn't have said that and I'm sorry for it. It was childish on my part!

Best Regards,
Russ

Russ,

I know you've been burned a time or two with asus but you have also had some problems with gigabyte mobos only gigabyte was much more eager to resolve your problems than asus was. that is why I wrote the last sentence of my previous post.

Quote:
please don't badmouth asus until you've had the pleasure to own and use one of their flagship mobos. they still build damn good mobos and although their customer service isn't too whoopy, ya very seldom need it with their flagship models.
I wasn't pointing any fingers so please don't take it personal. I was only standing up for another mobo manufacturer that has served me very well. I haven't used gigabyte for some time but I was not impressed with the last one I had (it was for socket 478 but forgot the model). I know they have greatly improved since then and who knows, I might give one a try one of these days.

Oh you guys are silly!! ASUS and Gigabyte StinK!!!! heheheehe. :P NOT really, I have a mobo by each manufacturer and they seem just fine to me. btw the ASUS (A8N5X) is a lower end model and has been in good working order for over a year now and the Gigabyte (DS3P) is NEW and seems to work like a charm. Sorry but I haven't had it long enough to make an educated post about it and may not even if I have it for a year. lol.

You guys have so much experience I'm just plain jealous!!! Keep up the help fellas...... and thanks again for your time. ;)

OK guys im planning on building a new pc & need help/advice.

My cureent setup is:
AMD Athlon 3000+ 64 @2.2GHz
Asrock K8 upgrade motherboard
2GB Corsair twinx matching pair ddr400 pc 3200 ram
Nvidia Geforce 6600
Audigy SB 4
400w PSU

I want it to be able to play the latest games,
& maybe for the next couple of years as well.
I can currently run a lot of good games,
but i wont even attemp any of the latest tho it plays The orange box.

I have a budget of about £500
& was thinking of getting the CPU & Motherboard first.
I was wondering if i could get a good Quad Core & maybe a good motherboard for that kind of money?
Because then in another couple of months,
i'd upgrade the PSU & graphics card.

If i kept my existing ram & sound card would that make an impact on performance?

I'd like to hear anyones opinions.
Thanks

Is it just me or should every office pc or school system be equipped with these PC's?

http://youtube.com/watch?v=gJgzd68Tmcc

I mean those standard HP systems you get are maybe drawing over 110w?

This 60w system included in every business place/school that only runs spreadsheets etc could save our electricity bill by alot.

My overclocked core 2 duo and HD3870 draw 110W at idle, those PCs must be damn inefficient if they use that much.

Dougal79: The Orange Box is probably the least demanding of all new games that have come out recently, thanks to the efficiency of the Source engine. Games like Stalker, Supreme Commander, Crysis, Call of Duty 4 etc. though will be beyond the reach of a 6600.
For a wee bit more than £500 you can get:

Sam just thinking out loud here. ;)

What if 'he' dropped down to 2GB of RAM, to a 320 HDD, and NO sound card for now AND upgraded to a little more power on the P/S. I think that's cutting it a bit close even for that setup. If that was a NEW Intel cpu I wouldn't worry as much but given it's not the new structure and 'he' wants to run a 3000 series ATi gpu I believe going to at least 550W would better serve him. jm2c..... ;)

Could do, with a single hard disk he doesn't need to worry about power on surges, so a 450W unit should be fine, but no harm in erring on the safe side.

on a different note, a new development on my 3870 lag issue. Playing Crysis at top res (but with shadows/shaders low and AA off) the game ran fine for 10 minutes or so, after pacing through a section in a car rather than on foot, suddenly the game drops to 1 frame every 7 or 8 seconds, then blackscreens with repeating sound for about a minute, then crashes to the desktop. I then find that all my torrents have been stopped, with the error "insufficient system resources to complete the requested operation" - I was using 2.5GB of my 4GBs... Is this too much for windows? My memory monitor reads 3582MB available for use, so I don't see why everything should shut down at 2.5GB. Do I have a faulty stick of RAM perhaps?

Also worthy of note, the game no longer loads. It will crash at the blank black screen before the intro videos are usually played...
Interestingly enough, neither does the demo, which is untouched from a working config a week ago...

Come to think of it Sam, i got a similar system resource error when video editing(which i never got on my crappy 1gb ram on laptop)

It fixed itself out when i closed the program down and reopened it but still i would have expected better.

That E6750 has jumped up £10 since i looked at it last month.......

It just seems rather fishy that my PC runs like ass after adding a new graphics card. I never got any errors, bugs or problems with my old X1900 apart from not being able to play CSS at 2560x1600. I'm not sure all this hassle is worth it for the extra few frames per second. I'm going to reinstall windows and put the omega drivers on straight off, and if that doesn't solve my problems, I'm changing to an 8800GT. Sod the lack in image quality, it's worth paying the extra 25% for a card that actually works...
