Sounds like you're good to go. As for the fans, it depends whether they push the same amount of air or not. If there's not too much of a difference between how much air is blowing in and how much is blowing out, then any remaining vents can cover that, if the case has any.
If there's a gross difference in how the case is setup, that's something to consider and work on.
You're probably ready to power on and install windows now though.

Looking good so far Rob.
I await with baited breath the results of the power up (seeing as how my MOBO and CPU will basically be the same :))
Also as Im getting the same case (lol) you say you rerouted the 12v power cable, where did you route it.
Oh yeah and youve got to get some round IDE cables to replace the big flat blue thing gigabyte provide ;)

I almost posted that too. he can do that anytime in the hopefully near future. man those ribbon cables can sure clutter up a nice build.

IMO, rounded ones are still massive, and restrict more airflow.
all you have to do is tape the flat ones to the side of the case, and then just raise it to put in the socket. no airflow loss, and easy :)

rob,
is the power light on the monitor orange? that is an indication that something is wrong (no signal) could be something as minor as the GPU not seated in the socket well to something as major as a problem with the cpu.

I have a bunch of extra Pentium 4 chips laying around, a 3.4ghz, a 2.8 ghz, and a 1.6ghz. I'd like to turn these chips into decent systems that could be potentially upgraded in the future to Core 2 Duos/Quads. , but I'm having a hard time picking out a motherboard. The only requirement I have is it should be an ATX board, and as cheap as possible. No extra features, just standard stuff, on board lan/audio, a single PCI-e x16, as many usb/sata as possible. I'm really just getting kind of confused about which chipsets are best for this kind of project.
Anybody have any suggestions?

The Gigabyte GA-P35 boards are pretty good, loads of USB and SATA, and compatible with all socket 775 chips out so far.

Yeah the GA-P35-DS3 boards are awesome! Sure you can get something cheaper, but if you plan on upgrading the CPU later on you want it based on a decent motherbaord. The GA-P35-DS3L would be my recommendation on a cheap and highly featured board.

Specifically the P35-DS3L, well featured for the price.
Rob: Don't mean to be a downer but the problem is almost undoubtedly not with your monitor. No video signal means there's a problem with part of the build, check the power connectors again thoroughly and reseat the cards and memory sticks.

Yea I actually have a GA-P35C-DS3R, I just wasn't sure if they would support the older chips. I think I'll take a look at the DS3L, it's just so tempting to grab some of these $50-60 boards from Abit or whoever.
Thanks for the replies.

As tempting as it is, I'd advise against it.

I'm on board with the DS3 mobos, I'd go as far as to get the DS3R for a little future proofing. I little more features than the DS3L if you ask me. jm2c...
ABOUT Rob!! Just listened to him (yep by phone) and he has it up and running. Had a "naff" monitor. lol. That's such a funny expression to me sammy. ;) I couldn't believe it either. ;) Just happens sometimes.
Im sure he'll post something soon. :D

Guess I eat my words then! lol
I can only assume the phrase "naff" never occurs in american society?
It doesn't mean broken, it means generally a bit poor, sub-standard...

so the monitor was bad. that's rare. is it a new or an old one he had laying around? had he ever used it before? does it have both AGP and DVI interface and this was the first time he tried the DVI interface? I'm just curious of the circumstances.
I've built new pc's and had no signal to the monitor a couple times. once I didn't have my GPU seated good and the other time it was a defective brand new CPU (P4 3.4ghz).

Only time I had that happen to me was when my motherboard was fried. Seems that it can be many things. It was the first time I had built a PC and I freaked out so much lol.

ok guys. sorry for takeing so long in gettin gback with you all.
yes it was the monitor that was bad. i hooked it up to my flat panel monitor im on now and it worked fine.i then hooked the old monitor up to this computer and it still didnt work.
so i just got back from a thrift store and got a old NEC 15 inch CRT monitor and its working great. its up and running right now.
i installed win xp pro corp edition
then put in the gigabyte driver CD installed them
then put in the GPU driver CD installed them. no problems
as for me worrying about the mobo working with the CPU, well i got the 2.1 version pluged in the cpu and it fired right up.
looked in the device manager and it shows me haveing the E8400 @3.0ghz.2gbs mem ect...
i did have to uninstall the thermaltake fan on the side panel. it sounded like a helacopter...lol so i know have 2 exhaust fans and 1 intake..i did just go into the bios and looked at temps the tower temp was 32c and the CPU temp was 22c it has been running(on) for about 30 mins now.
so from here what do i need to do? other than install my programs that i want in it.
thanks for all your guys help.
i cant think to straight right now so much going on with this.what are some programs i need to put on it. cpu z ect....i will need to DL them then save to a disc and install from disc. as i dont have it online yet
