Okay.. I helped a friend out with an issue with his computer.. I stuck his ram inside my PC and I could not read the ram specs right.. since there were none.. I plugged it in.. and I ran the pc.. It ran a little but told me that the wrong ram type was in there. I pulled out and re did mine.. I Formatted his hard drive and got his Windows XP running.. Come to find out when I was done plugging my junk back up.. I could not get past the warm up starting phase.. Well, I left it unplugged and in the morning.. I plugged it back up and there are some programs not working.. had to renew my MOBO video driver.. and when I went to revive my ATI Raedeon card.. a 128 .. It tells me that I can see it.. but when I do drivers.. it tells me the device cannot start. Not to mention.. I can't do any drastic changes to my desktop.. I can't go do my theme for WOW or replace the background image.. I hope to god that I don't have to reformat my PC..

Okay.. This is the new situation. I have the ATI card up and running again but.. There is something very wrong here. I can't change up themes or apply background images. When I go to do the changes, it just sits there like it did it already (that little 'applying changes' screen) and I see no real end result. Same old shit. I am wondering if I have to wipe my hard drive? I hope to god I don't.. cause I will be in tears reinstalling my stuff and downloading WOW patches all night.

It sounds to me like you have a corrupt .cpl file. What OS are you running? Do you have the original disk for your OS? I may be able to help you get the problem solved.

I see that you are probably running XP. Your .cpl files will be located under c:\windows\system32

There are a lot of these files. The files are not the .dll files. What you are suppose to do is time consuming so let me know if you have the original OS disk.

I run XP Pro on my PC. I don't have the original disk on me at the moment.. I lent it to a friend since he needed to get some files off of my disk. I hope what I need to do is just pop the CD in there and just let it do it's own work. I don't mind waiting. I have a standby laptop. It's kinda POS but it gets what I need done.

Well, you could always decide to do a system restore and that might fix your problem but I don't think it will. The location of the .cpl files is in your C:\Windows\System32

The object is to create a folder on your desktop and move all of the .cpl files to it. Then open your Control panel and see if it works. It should open without a problem. The .cpl files are the tools that the control panel uses to do its tasks. There are a lot of files to move.

The next step is to move the files one at a time back to the System32 folder. Each time you move a file check the Control Panel. If at a time it stops working it is because that .cpl file is corrupt.

On the XP Pro disk that you have just open it, do not run it. I believe the folder is the i386 folder that holds these files. Replace the bad files with new files.

I will look on the web and see if I can find a site that has those files available. Another step to try would be to replace the files with new files from the i386 folder. I have never had to do this so I am not 100% sure, but it will probably ask you if you would like to replace the existing file with the new one. Tell it yes to all. That might work.

By the way, locating the .cpl file can be a little difficult. The file name does not display .cpl after it. You can use search to find all of the .cpl files if you need to.

I will check out the web and see if I can find a host for .cpl files.

I found this site CLICK HERE

I have never used this site but it appears to be a zip file you can download to restore all of the .cpl functions. This may be the key to getting the system restored. Let me know if it works.

I just did that one .CPL zip download on that site. There are a few things I am wondering and trying not to tinker with too much. I found that most of my theme files are missing. I wonder what happened?

Son of a ..... Winantivirus was on my system. I ran into this program once before on my laptop. God.. it hosed it up royally. How can some one market such a skewed product? I mean this .. 'program' harvests more viruses and trojans and malware than it prevents!

Do you have all of the Ad-Aware programs such as Ad-Aware (Lavasoft), A-Squared Free, Spybot Search & Destroy, & CCleaner? You should also have HijackThis for you to post problems.

The best way to run most of these programs is in safe mode. Then run a HjT log (HijackThis) and post it here for me to review. It sounds like there is a little more wrong with you computer besides missing some tools! You can download all of the programs I mentioned above at http://www.download.com Just remember to look at the items before you remove them. After you run and post your HjT log I will take a look at it.

If you haven't used HjT before, what you need to do is make a folder under the C:\ drive. You may call the folder HjT if you like. Download the program to that folder. Then re-name the HijackThis.exe file to something different. Then create a shortcut on your desktop. Make sure to run the other programs in safe mode first.

Syx.. things were getting worse, and I could not update, install or anything. I resorted to what I knew best at this kind of situation where things go to pot.. I reformatted. I hated to resort to it but I try to pride myself in not going to a lot of bad sites since they have the problem makers. But Winantivirus was the blow that sank my battle ship. I am getting most of my stuff back.. but some one hijacked my first four cds of World of Warcraft. This is not a good day and night for me.I need hijack this and I think A2 .. Spybot I can pick up quick with the others when I get my base programs up and going. A silly question... Can RAM get a virus? Cause the person I was helping.. said that he got a RAM shelf life virus.. I didn't believe him, but I am wondering now.

Well, I have never heard of RAM having a virus. RAM stands for Random Access Memory. When you turn your computer off everything is erased. That particular memory is only used for temporary storage as you work. On the other hand RAM can go bad and cause you to have problems with your computer, however, it is not a virus.

I hate formatting a machine. It is too much work to restore it. Good luck, and get those programs I mentioned because they should be run at least once a week to keep your machine clean.
