I have an HP Pavilion a819n, DVD±RW HP DVD Writer 640b, Firmware version E152. Is the link above the correct firmware update for me?

Also I have no idea what I am doing. This is my first time with this kind of thing and I heard about what happens if you mess up your firmware update.

It looks fine to me. It gives you the option of using a CD versus a floppy disc. I'd use the CD as floppies are unreliable. Pretend that floppy discs don't exist and follow the instructions.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

But doesn't it require a DVD-RW drive? I know DVD±R drives have the ability to play DVD-RW but that doesn't mean the drive itself is a DVD-RW drive. I don't know....

I'm not sure what you mean. If you're talking about HP's use of the term "DVD-RW", what that probably means is that it's a generic name for what is more properly called a DVD+/-RW drive. According to Videohelp.com's database (which, strangely, does not like the "B" model, but does list it's 640-series brothers) says this is a DVD+/-RW drive.

Probably. If you are having trouble with your drive recognizing media, you should. Usually, though, that's the only reason to do a firmware update, and if you use quality discs like Verbatim, then odds are good even the older firmwares support them.
