Hi ive recently converted an AVI Video file over to MPEG2 using TMPG XPress 4.0, then using TMPG DVD Author Pro to burn the file onto a blank DVD disc.

Now when i play it on my dvd player and watch it on my TV, its like the picture is to big for the screen, so i adjust the screen format from 16:9 to 4:3 and its fine but when i do that theirs two big black bars on the left and right hand side.

So could anyone help me, so when i do play my dvd i can watch it in 16:9 format without the loss of some of the picture or in the 4:3 format but with out the black bars either side.

Thank you.

I don't use XPress but in TMPGEnc Plus I use that the video source is 1:1 VGA and it seems to work out fine. I have a 4:3 TV and it will add the black bars on the top and bottom if the original was 16:9. Make sure video arrange method (output) is full screen while keeping aspect ratio.

Where did you get it, from a camera etc., or is it an Xvid/Divx movie?

Well it's 4:3 if it looks correct with the side bars. For a 4:3 pic to fit a 16:9 screen there will be trade-offs. Either you will lose some of the picture (top and bottom) and or the Aspect Ratio will be off if the picture is stretched horizontally to eliminate the side bars making everyone will look shorter and fatter. That's just the way it is.

This is always interesting. What was the original aspect ratio of the DivX you downloaded? 4:3 or 16:9?

With a Source video that's 4:3 you should never try to make it a 16:9..I have sometimes tried this(by mistake, forgeting to reset the mpeg settings) and i get some messed up misshapen video(like black bars on the sides!) Alway's go 4:3->4:3(flag LetterBox) in the encoder so that if you own a 16:9 or someday Hope to own one You'll have the correct Resolution( with black bars TOP & Bottom)

With a Source video(.avi or DivX)that's 16:9; You can pan & scan it and make a good 4:3 copy(for full screen viewing on a 4:3, then even take that and add a letterbox version. And also the 16:9->16:9(with letterboxing) will work on your 4:3 TV with bars top and bottom.

to my limited knowledge...there should never be Black bars on the left & right...unless somebody did something wrong in the encoding or they are using a resolution framesize less than 720xX or 704xX

To properly view (with the correct AR) a 4:3 source on a 16:9 TV there will always be side bars, usually gray to avoid burn-in, referred to as pillarboxing. Most sets will give you the option to fill the screen but there are always the trade-offs I mentioned.

:throws water on MysticE to Wake him Up!, Grins!:

Stickroad said BLACK BARS on the LEFT&RIGHT...black bars are Part of the Video....NO BLACK BARS should bE THERE....

Gray Bars are displayed by Player/TV are not part of the Video MPEG..yes they are there until you adjust your set..and squeeze them out making the Image 33% larger....I hate the gray bars! but you can adjust them out.....BLACK BARS shouldn't be on the sides EVER(unless the framesize W is smaller than 720 then only maybe just very thin bars!
Here's a link to a nice thread which includes some examples of what a 4:3 should look like on a 16:9( yes, the main article deals with Anamorphic Widescreen...but the example of how a proper 4:3 Letterbox should appear is still valid...notice your Gray BARS..and after you adjust them out....There shouldn't be BLACK BARS on the sides never!

http://gregl.net/videophile/anamorphic.htm

P.S. Ok, I just phoned a friend on this...he says his WideScreen has Black bars on the sides...not Gray...his is an Older model(we're assuming) Geeezzz, Black bars on the sides! that would freak the hell out of me...If I spent 6-8 hrs encoding with Tmpgenc(knowing I shouldn't have black bars on the sides! then started playing it and saw black bars!"what the XXXX!" would be my first thought.

I said usually gray, my friend's Maxent plasma has black bars. Whatever the bar issue/color/size a 4:3 source that fills a 16:9 screen will either crop (which it appears to do in the poster's case) or distort the aspect ratio.
