Yeah I was just wondering if it is likely that a set-top player would be able to read SVCD format video on a DVD-R.

I ask this because i can't get my xvid avi converted from AVI to DVD Mpeg-2.

Thanks

Did you try TMPGEnc and TMPGEnc DVD Author. User guide on the latter is here:

I use TMPGEnc wizard, DVD Lab to author and Nero to burn... Quality is the same as a SVCD but a DVD player will recongnize the disc.

If your original file is in AVI then this will not be in SVCD format because this would be an MPEG 2 - the same as DVD quality. You have two options. Either burn the AVI file to CD as an MPEG 1 (VCD) or use an authoring prog such as TMPGEnc above.

Can AVI files not be mpeg4 as well. I have plenty of DivX files ending in .avi

To make a dvd from an AVI file, the easiest way I have found is by using NeoDVD. Trust me.
