im new into all this port forwarding stuff. but i think i know pretty much how it works by now. how ever i got a question which i believe will help my programs to work. is there any way i can test if a port is open? Or well to explain my problem: i use Azureus and im trying to forward a port to use. i have set up static ip's. i have no firewalls (yet). ive tried to open lots of ports in my d-link router but every single one fails the nat test in Azureus. Is this because my internet provider only have a few ports open to use and i am not able to open for any futher ports? At first i contacted my internet provider because i was unable to connect to and use any p2p programs at all. How ever now that problem is fixed but still most p2p programs u need to set up port forwarding in order to get any DL speed at all. my question then is what port should i use, if its even possiple with this noob internet i got? can you use any given port in a p2p program like Azureus? .. hope anyone understands me and can help me..

If you think its an ISP blocking issue, try using 1720( I think that is the port)Since they can't block that as it is used for something else also....

ok i looked up all the ports i opened in my router on this HP
http://www.grc.com/
they were all closed.. even 1720.. but im pretty much sure that they are open in my router.. god damn.. what next? so if they are closed i am behind another router somewhere probably? well its not in my house. besides the d link router i have connection thru a airlive wireless access point. i talked to the internet guy today which set up that box and he said that it could be used as a router as well but in this case it wasnt. so when i needed to open ports it was thru my d link router only... what am i doing wrong?:(

Are you sure your private ip is still 192.168.0.174?
start/settings/network connections
Double click the local area connection
Click support
That will show you your current local router ip address.
That number has to match the port forward number private id In your picture.

An open port would show in grc.com shields up. Maybe the router is stuck and needs a reset.
Check the 55555 at grc.com
I don't have Azureus but I recall you have to tell it what port you forwarded.
I just tried a port and grc told me it was open.
What about windows firewall, did you let Azureus through?

its been restarted over and over again... is it possiple that i am not able to open up any ports besides those who my ISP wants me to open? hmm.. its really weird i tried port 3724 which is for world of warcraft and it says port closed,( on www.grc.com )
but i know thats not true since i am able to log on and play.. my router for sure claims that it has opened the ports ive selected. ive also tried the DMZ option but still it wouldnt work. (DMZ isnt that like open warzone internet? or with many, if not all ports open? eh)

gah just tried direct connection. still yellow faces. hmm.. okay i guess its something that the ISP can only do. If i have direct connection now all ports should be open right? but the nat tests keeps failing as well.... therefor i think this is something only my ISP can fix. i dont think i am actually able to open ports.
CONCLUSSION ( probably missspelled^^) i just tried to look up some ports at grc.com with direct connection.. all closed.. therefor i believe i am not able to do anything more then i have already done. my isp is in control of the ports..... also as i mentioned before i contacted my isp at first to even be able to use any p2p appz at all. so they are owning my internet connection>_< guess im gonna ask my isp for a port to be opened and how it will work then.....

Your on a family network right. Do you know if that direct connect goes directly to the isp or is there another router or device somewhere else inline that you don't know about. Isp's usually don't block ports. Your going to have to do some snooping from where the line comes into the building and see if it goes to any other device.
With no router or other device in line how could you need to open any ports? They are all open. Port forwarding is for people behind routers only. There would be no device to forward without one.

I have a similar problem - I've followed all the instructions on PortForwarding.com but I still get a NAT error so I unplugged and plugged directly into my modem....problem is I really need internet access on my second computer so this is a pain in the butt.
I read something about needing IP Forwarding to be enabled on your computer. I'm not sure if that's true or not. I use XP and I managed to enable it but it still didn't work.
I even disabled the router's firewall and I still get a NAT error. Any help would be so greatly appreciated.

the problem for me was my isp. they had closed down for p2p. i contacted them about my problem and they opended a port for me. btw you can use www.grc.com to check if you got all your ports open when you have direct connection. if they arent you isp are they guys to deal with i believe..

But if it were my ISP causing it wouldn't I have the same problem when plugged directly into my modem? I only have the problem when using my router.
