so recently its been taking me 2 hours to rip a movie (1000-3000kb/s only as compared to my 8000-1100kb/s i used to get).

i went into my device manager and it said my HD is set on Ultra DMA 6 - Ultra133, my dvd drive is on Ultra DMA 2 - Ultra 33, so that's not the problem.

any other ideas?

Hi Diving
Few other things to check.
What condition are the dvd's in? If they have fingerprints, smudges, scratches etc will slow things down.

Keeping up on the regular pc maintenance bit? Like disc cleanup, defrag, virus & spyware scans, registry cleaner.

How old is the drive? Firmware up to date?
The lens can get dusty so using a dvd lens cleaner or blowing some canned air in it may help.

dvd's are in good condition.

my computer is clean and upkept regularly.

drive is 1.5 years old...i doubt its a dust issue too cuz if i see dust in my comp ill go blow it out =/

i read a thread about uninstalling the nvidia IDE drivers and using the microsoft ones. would that be a viable solution?

Might be but if you had these same drivers when you had faster ripping speeds might not be the cause.

What's changed pc wise since this starting happening?

Any other drive in the PC you can rip from to see if it's just this one?

nothings changed that i know of...i just ripped davinci code, some parts of it go up to 17,000kb/s but then other times in DVD Shrink its going at 1000 =/ the actual encoding while running DVD Shrink is the part it slows down at i think. 2 hours is way too long when it used to take less then 30mins

Yep 2 hrs is way too long when it was 30 mins before.

Did you have the Nvidia drivers installed when you were getting better rip speeds? Update them recently by any chance?

Davinci Code has all of Sony's garbage on it and may give some drives a problem. Though if the movies that don't have the latest copy protection give you the same problem that ain't it.

Have another pc you can try this drive in to see if it's something w/ the pc or the drive itself?

Check your settings in Shrink - you may have one of the quality settings checked - deep analysis or quality enhancement. This would increase the time.
When you click Backup - check the 'quality settings' tab.

I would think if it was the drive the initial analysis Shrink does would be slow too.

i would think shrink alone can not handle davinci code. need to rip with something else. i have not did this one yet.my shrink was slooow to encode due to protection..
