ILO DVDRHD04 IR Problem

I've been the happy owner of an ILO DVDRHD04 for the past years and have been using it almost daily without any problems, and have the latest firmware flashed inside. Tonight I was trying to catch up on some saved TV when I paused the unit to run up stairs. When I came down it began acting very flaky. First it would not resume when I pressed play.

Thinking it was the batteries I immediately changed them with a fresh set and still no luck. Thinking it locked up I pressed power on the unit as the remote didn't work. This soft reset didn't help, nor did the hard reset I did next by unplugging it. My next step was to run to the workshop and grab an IR tester I had and the remote works perfectly even at a range of a few feet from my detector. This range was the same for some additional remotes that I tested at the same time so I beleive this to be working properly.

Next I sat down in front to see it responded to any of the front pannel controls, and everything works perfectly. While sitting in front I then got it to work provided I aimed the remote directly at the front right where the IR sensor is at a distance of not more than 4 inches. Occasionally the unit responds to a command other than that called for, like "play" brining up "timer". My next step is to open it up and check the IR detector and see if I can check that output, and possibly replace it.

Anybody else have any similiar problems and what did you do? I would really hate to have to get rid of this, but a 4 inch distance from the remote is not going to work.
