You can update here, not sure how old your burner is,
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=23
the last update is from Jul 2006, It should work with 16X media, my SonyDRU-510A will work with certain 16X media.
Updating firmware is an easy try, if not, newegg.com always has great deals on burners.
http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/Catego...D-Burners-Media
I hope this helps.
According to this review your burner is capable of 16X burning.

thanks for the advice, I downloaded a newer version but when I
run it I get a message: ´target NEC ND 3500A is not found ´..
is this because I use Alcohol 120%?
is my dvd-player too old? (2004)

Which firmware were you updating to? Sometimes you can't jump too many versions at once.

2.1B is actually the newest firmware. 2.58 is really the same as 2.18. I think 2.58 was for another company's burner that was rebranding the NEC 3500. Try updating to 2.1B since that's in the same chain as your current firmware 2.16.

If you want to disable the riplock, RPC (region) protection and allow for all +R media booktyping, this version of 2.1B should do the trick:

I have the same nd-3500ag drive with version 2.86 installed. 16 X DVD-R dont work but 8 X disks work just fine. What version should I have? I tried to update to version mentioned above but only thing happens is a pop up saying Target NEC ND-3500A is not found correctly. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Hi.

I don't think you have an NEC OEM version. You likely have a burner that NEC supplied another company for use in its own product. When a firmware cannot locate a burner, it generally means that firmware is not appropriate for that burner.

Did your burner come with a computer system or is it one you added? If it came with your system, who is the manufacturer? If you added it, where did you obtain it and what brand was it? Mad Dog, etc.? Is there a label on the burner and if so, what is listed as the manfacturer and model?

Thanks for the fast reply. You right, my burner came with Fujitsu-Siemens computer and had been working just fine. Does this give you any help?

How do I insall that one? I found a solution that works at least right now from this site http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/ and version NEC 2.88 (same strategy as NEC 2.18) firmware update. That was the only that worked. But I dont know if that s the latest one so can you still give me a hint how do I install firware from your link?

The F-S update has to be burned to a CD and then rebooted with the CD in the drive to update. Why they choose to do that I'm not sure. You have to click the box above where it says download to acknowledge the legal requirements and then the download will bold and be a valid link to DL the software.

2.88/2.18 is one of the earlier stock firmwares. It's the one that came with my NEC burner. IIRC it burned OK for me. I use 2.1B in that burner now.

Now that you have 2.88 installed you may be able to update to a newer version that you couldn't before. Otherwise you'll have to try the F-S update.

Nope didnt work. I Tryed both updates 2.98 and F-S update that you gave. Nothing happends during reboot. I dont have blank cd´s so I tried with DVD-RW, do you know does this make a difference? I Tried to Mount version 2,98 with Daemon Tools 4.03 but didnt work right properly. F-S update went right but just didnt work. Is there anything else I should try?

I don't think using a RW makes a difference but I'm not sure. I've never had a firmware update require burning to a CD so that seems odd in the first place to me. So the 2.88 firmware you obtained from DeBoer's site didn't work either?

The F-S downloaded file is a disk image so it has to be burned with Nero or ImgBurn or some program that'll burn a CD image.

When you rebooted, did the batch update file run on its own? If not did you open the CD and click the update.bat file?

2.88 version worked from here http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/ . My 16 X DVD-R:s works with this firmware. When I try to install 2.98 my Daemon Tools dont like the file. File is .bin file. Should I try with something other than Daemon Tools? F-S update burns right, but when I double click update (or any other file) a window opens for a 0,000001 seconds :) and nothing happens. If I reboot with disk inside nothing happens.

I don't know what's up with the F-S update. I just tried it to see if I could get it to work as well. I think you'll have to stick with 2.88 for now.

Modified firmware is playing with fire. Unless it only changes the ID string to a version that is supported by the original equipment manufacturer, modified firmware: 1) invalidates the warranty, and 2) makes assumptions that are dangerous. The ND-2500 could be modified with a firmware setting that turned it into a DL drive. That is, half of them with a particular laser diode could. The other half with a different diode were destroyed by the same firmware setting. Unless you have complete trust in some guy with a $350,000 CATs tester in his basement bedroom, avoid modified firmware. You and your drive can get burned.

I dont want to play with fire. My burner came with firmware 2.86 and my 16 X disks didnt work. And only update that worked was 2.88. And I guess that 2.98 is version I should have. Or should I ? :) And versions from F-S site that should work, well that didnt work. But right now my problem is solved and my 16 X DVDs work. So Thanks for the tips.

I wouldn't worry about the F-S firmware if the NEC 2.88 works for you. You might send F-S tech support an email and ask them why their firmware won't flash to your burner.

I use Mad Dog's firmware(2FD) and their bitsetting software (WinBType). I have owned NEC's 3500AG and Mad Dog 16XDVD9 Burners. I find they read/burn and never wearout. I have used for years and no problems.

PS. I might show as a newbie; I have been hear since DVDXCopy Express around 2002/2003. I hardly post. Happy Burning!!!!!!!!!
