I cloned my original informercial dvds using dvdxcopy xpress onto a dvd-r media. I am now trying to rip the backup-clone onto my harddrive but it keeps stopping in the middle I tried the following:

1)dvd decryptor
2)smartripper
3)Surfsecret
4)super dvd ripper
5)dvdx
6)dup-dvd
7)clonedvd

I tried other rippers as well and it's all the same they all stop in the middle. At first I thought that the disc could be damaged but I have several other infomercial dvds that I cloned and I am getting the same error with those discs. I even tried using a different dvd drive and there it still stops in the middle.

Unfortunately all my original dvds were lost in a fire so all I have left are the backup-clones and I cannot rip them. Please help me.

You can copy them directly on the fly with Nero. If you have Win DVD Platinum there is a plugin for it that allows you to upload the disc files to hard drive but if I were you I'd just copy directly to another disc.

My dog ate my originals, along with the cases. Durned Dog! I swear if I ain't had him for ages I would kick him outta the house!

So you keep your backups in the safety deposit box of your local bank just in case!?

Just curious about one thing..... Infomercial DVD's? You mean the Infomercials that are on late night television are now available on DVD? And where can I get these?

(sorry for the sarcasm, couldn't resist.) :)

These are DVD's that I got from an informercial that have an Interactive Real Estate Course on them. I lost the originals and I want to backup the Copies that I made last year.

i had exactly the same problem, it seems that there is no software available that allows u to copy or rip a dvd-r that has not been finalized. this unfortunatly means that all the backups you have done so far cannot be copied. however the solution is simple just use Nero 6 to burn your dvds in udf/iso mode (This seems to make discs that are compatible with most stand alone dvd players)and before u burn make sure that NO MULTISESSION is checked in the multisession tab. it will then produce a dvd-r that can be ripped or copied with any software. I assume this will work with other burning software as long as u have the no multisession or finalize disc option.

That's what I said above days ago. You can use version 5.5 of Nero and just follow the wizard to copy the DVD disc direct. You don't need to rip a copied disc so what's all the fuss about?

Yes disc copy works just fine if u have a finalized disc but if u dont the u get read errors such as those explained in the origional question,so my point was make sure that the first backup is not a multisession disc then Nero (or any other software) will copy the copied disc just fine.

Thank you Rob and Discmania for the greatly appreaciated info. Although, I still need to rip the dvds onto my HD and according to you, Discmania, there is no software that is available to do this.

Well, if anyone out there knows of any software that can rip finalized DVDs w/o any errors please don't keep it a secret!

Rob7179: If you burn DVD video files the disc is automatically finalised, as it is when duplicating. Jeeper: I did not say there is no software that can rip the disc to your hard drive and you did not seem to make it clear that this is what you wanted to do, so I assumed you wanted to rip in order to create a backup disc? The best way to do what you want is to convert the files on the disc to MPEG at the same time as ripping to your HD since you have tried everything else. Try this tool which should do the job: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_encoders/tmpgenc.cfm

Hi everyone I am very new to all this DVD back up copying stuff. I have a very important question though that would be appreciated if someone could answer. I am currently using DVDXCOPY EXPRESS to burn my back ups. This program does not allow me to make a copy of a copy because of the encryption that it puts at the begining of all copies i guess. What would allow me to copy a already copied DVD, The easiest way would be nice. I dont want to rip and put onto hard drive, just a staight copy and burn will do. I have a copy of Nero that i hear ppl talking about but I dont think its up to date as far as the latest version. Thank you for any help you can give.

Firstly it's best to install the latest update of Nero if you have version 5.5 which is 5.5.10.42. If you have Nero 6 then that's fine. Just use the wizard to navigate to DVD Copy and burn. It's quite simple.

Just a quick note for Jeeper: to backup a DVD to your hard drive that is NOT copyrighted just go to 'my computer' then open the drive the disc is in (or use 'explore'), then highlight the Video TS folder ,then click on copy and choose the folder you want the video files to got to. When finished go to the first BUP file in the folder you chose and double click to play it. If the disc IS copyrighted you need to use DVD Decrypter which will do the same thing - download it from this site.

DiscMania: Thanks for the posts but I am still a bit perplexed. First off, I know it is impossible to use DVDXCopy Express to backup a backup. That being said, is it possible to use Nero to backup a backup made with DVDXCopy Express. If so, what would give me a failure message on the intial read? I have tried a few dvds. Also, I tried to burn the backup on the fly and promptly made a coaster. Any thoughts would be helpful.

DVDXCopy is a program i hate, mainly because it prevents you from doing back ups of back ups, though i believe there are ways around this, and because it puts FBI warnings all over the show. Oh, it also costs $70-$100, so thats not really an incentive. Why not just DVD Shrink for free?

I use Nero to sometimes copy a disc originally copied with Xpress and never have a problem. I use version 5.5.10.42 and DVD Copy option (disc-at-once but no multiseesion). Should work for you.

thanks you two! I actually upgraded my Nero from the link on the front page of AfterDawn. After that, i was able to burn the backup I made with DVDXCopy Express with some ease. I DO have a follow up question though. I have a separate 16X dvd rom to read and an 2.4X NEC nd1100 burner. Why if my "reader drive" is 16X does it take 1 hour to read on a 4 gig movie? Also, it took me 1.5 hours to burn the movie at 2.4X. Is this normal? What can I do to increase the speed?

BTW..if you two ever come to SoCal, I owe you a beer!

Ripping a 4Gb disc shouldnt take no longer than 10-15 minutes with either DVD Decrypter or SmartRipper

Also if your drive was burning at X1 it would finish in 60minutes , so something is wrong
X2.4 would take 20-25 minutes (roughly)

Definitely hardware related I'd have thought as both your drives are taking much too long to achieve their goal.
I don't really deal w/ hardware issues but have you tried all sorts of setting changes on your two DVD drives , ie; Master/Slave Primary/Secondary ? Are they both on the same IDE cable cos that might (though it doesnt for me) give conflict issues. DMA on/off ?? etc etc

I hope you find resolution to these matters
