I've been dealing primarily with Sony, and drive after drive fails.. I'm fed up. What is the best burner out there? And is there any need for dual drives, or would one drive work fine as my dvdrw, cdrw, and dvd-rom?

One drive is sufficient.

Most recently produced Sony drives are made by Liteon. You can go to the link below and find out who actually made your Sony burner:

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=30

My favored burners are those made by BenQ and NEC, although not the newest NEC 18X burner (7000 series). The NEC 3550 is good. The BenQ 1650, 1655, 1670 are all good imo.

Yes, most Sony burners are LiteOn. Sony is not that bad, just make sure to update firmware regularly to the latest and you'll be fine. Furthermore, number 1 rule is to always use 1st class media like; Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Hitachi Maxell (Made In Japan) and you'll be free of worries.

I've had my DRU710 (a rebadged SOHW 1633S) for 3 years and she's still burning like new. My other LiteOn SHW 160P6S is burning flawlessly as well. Plus both can "booktype" easily when burning with Nero Burning Rom, Nero Express, ImgBurn or DVD Decrypter.

Most popular burners are LiteOn, BenQ and Plextor because these drives can booktyped DVD+R and DVD+R DL into DVD-ROM smoothly, plus they got their own "booktype utility" on the side too.

Good luck hunting on your next DVD burner.

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.

i heard that the dw1670 is not all that great man. It use the panasonic chip set instead of the phillips. so i will say its no where near as good ad 1650 or the 1655.

I wouldn't recommend the benq 1670 but highly recommend the 1650 or 1655 or even the 1640 is good. The benq utilities (qsuite and benq booktype management utility) will not work with the 1670 due to chipset manufacturer change.

The CD burner drive is the plextor premium, best dvd burner is the benq 1655 or 1650, my 3rd choice would be benq 1640. And from what ive been reading the best drive for reading disc that are scratched up and even cracked is the optorite but i forgot the model #.

your not gonna find one online, u gotta go to your local stores, compusa, office depot, office max, etc. They will be rebadged drives, thats how i got mine, it was a rebadged, but the sticker label on top of the unit even said benq 1655, $54 after rebates for my 1655. im thinking about picking up the 1650 for 29.99 at compusa After rebates.

Well, staples have I/O magic lightscribe burner
for 69.99 but there is $20 rebate so it ends
up to be okay. Its suppose to be a rebadge dw1655.
But dont quote me on it. I think some guys in this forum
mentioned they were but i will not gurantee it.
you will have to do little research and it might be worth it.

yea i got it from staples it ends up being $54 and change after rebate. You have a 50/50 chance it will either be a Benq 1655 or a Liteon. Took me 2 tries, 1st box i opened was a liteon and the second was a benq. it was like opening christmas presents. I opened the box from the bottom, that way i wouldnt break the seal and the staples people wouldnt get mad. Its a benq 1655 even has the benq sticker ontop the drive, all they did was take the benq logo off the faceplate, other than that everything was the same.

i think a 1655 is just a 1650 with 'Lightscribe' capability added
