folks

having issues with my isp - currently 'pipex' in the uk

essentially it would appear that they are implementing traffic shaping and capping everything torrent-wise at around 20kB/s.
bit out of order, since i am paying for an 8Mb line.

any thoughts on getting past this? - have tried various encapsulation methods, however no joy so far.

alas, it would appear that i am stuck with these cretins for another 11 1/2 months, since they made me change to a new tariff and therefore a new contract.

not impressed.

any assistance would be most welcome.

using utorrent or Azureus, ports forwarded ok, but still small d/l speed.

Try using either port 443 or 8080. I use 443 and havnt been capped due to it being a secure port. I dont really know how it works but it seems that ISPs cannot cap bandwidth going through these ports.
Also in utorrent make sure "Protocol Encryption" is enabled and "Allow incoming legacy connections" is ticked.

cheers mate, will give that a dabble.

are you with pipex too? - trying to get out, but it appears that i am tied to a 12month contract - the b*****ds.

shame, cause i hear nildram don't do so much traffic shaping - especially at off peak times.

cheers

No mate, Im with Tiscali. I heard they traffic shape too but with that port configuration Im getting good speeds.

I was actually thinking about changing ISPs soon and was contemplating going with Pipex. Guess Ill have to think twice now!

Let me know if you start getting decent speeds or not

alas, still no improvement on speed even when using port 443.

tried both the protocol encryption both 'enabled' and 'forced' but still capped at around 20kb/s.

i would advise you do a bit of research on pipex - they may be ok at other exchanges, but be very careful else you'll be tied to a 12month contract for sodding poor service.

if you have any thoughts, give us a shout -

nb - same speed capping with Azureus as well...

yeah hi,

im using Azureus with freedom2surf. they got bought by pipex a while back and ever since ive had the same problems of 10-40 kb/s download speeds.

a friend with the same isp has the same problem. we're both using modems but another friend with a router on f2s reports no such issue.

im luckier than tee99 and am out of the 12 months so i can change. the only isp i can find in the uk that says it isn't and has no intention of throttling us p2p users out is AOL.

trouble is they wont accept the migration code pipex gave me and are quoting downtime of up to 30 days to switch.

pipex have us over a barrel whatever way i we look at it.

lesson is, DONT TOUCH PIPEX WITH A BARGE POLE!!!!

- i have heard good things about nildram in the past, but i think they have been bought by pipex too.
rang them up and they said that they don't do traffic shaping or block any ports - and the best thing is that you can pay month by month i.e. don't have to sign up for a year's contract.

pipex, indeed absolute t*ssers - still trying to get out the contract - even getting poor speeds from their own speedtest page.

shocking absolutely shockingly bad.

check out www.moneymarket.com a few more people are p*ssed off with pipex too.

good luck with getting your mac code..!

cheers
