I'm looking to invest in an external USB2 enclosure to make use of some old 80GB WesternDigital HDs I have kicking around. I have no experience with them, at all.

What brands or specific enclosures are out there? I have looked and am confused...there are so many of them.

Any suggestions?

Hazel

USB2.0 enclosures are excellent things. i have 2 on my dvd burning PC and they hold dvd burners, and on my laptop i use something very similar to this one - http://www.usbtech.co.uk/catalog/product...7eb7bb08f7f0287 for a 120GB hard drive that's my MP3 collection. It spends most time connected to laptop playing tunes in Linux but it can just as easily connect to my other PC's, in fact sometimes i move the USB lead to the adjacent (Windows) PC as one (lazy) way to move music onto it.

...this is something new to me creaky - could you explain a bit more? Do you fit internal burners and hard drives into enclosures so they can connect through the USB?

Sorry if I'm a bit thick...

yup, there's also firewire etc enclosures. i'm old fashioned and stick to USB2.0, i have 2 of these type on my burning pc http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=111294 - one for my (standard) ripping drive (a dvd-rom/cdwriter combo drive), and the other holds a standard Benq DW1650 at the moment. any standard burner can go in those. my previous post was about enclosures just for hard drives, but there's various sorts of stuff out there.

in fact, here's my burner enclosures in the 2nd pic down - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/21/208116 and i have an internal burner in the sexy pc case under the 2 enclosures there.

my hard drive MP3 enclosure (for my linux laptop) is in the 1st pic under an old grey speaker but it's not much to look at anyway

Thanks man much appreciated...some very nice stuff! Wouldn't firewire be better for hard drive to help the data transfer? The Benq 1650 is well recommended on aD - any idea where from and how much? How do you get on with linux - the plus and minuses? And you even have the Samsung TV I want.

MP3 enclosure? - how does that work if you'd forgive me for asking?

I don't know a great deal about firewire, you could google but my simple answer is a 'probably, yes, slightly better than USB2.0' but someone can happily either prove me wrong or not.

As to availability of Benq 1650's, they're like gold dust now, keep your eyes peeled in the DVDR Drives forum for info, but i don't see much info these days; PC World here in UK still had loads of them when i was last in a branch or two, at something cheap (for PC World!!) like £33 or so. You in UK ?.

As to Linux, i've used a few different 'flavours' over the years, but mostly Mandriva Linux, have used that by far the most over the last 5yrs as it's real simple to maintain. There's soooo much Linux out there, i can't keep up with it all. I do Unix Admin for a living, and Linux is my way of keeping interested in Unix which isn't always the sexiest career in the world :P

Yup, the Samsung TV Is absolutely gorgeous :), they're much cheaper now in some places, i didn't shop around enough at the time, i just had to have it there and then :P

I had a spare 120GB hard drive so i chucked it in an enclosure to house my MP3 collection, i get sick of hunting for music cd's as i got sooo many so i prefer MP3.

Thanks once again for the length of your reply...you were in PCWorld? Doing what? - buying Imation discs I'll bet. Yeah I'm in the UK about 50miles north of London. Oh, Linux is work related...didn't know that...may try it someday out of interest. The TV is beautiful, I know what you mean about must have and the MP3s are on hard drive - ok I get it now. You have given me loads to think about and I am beholden unto you...regards

Imation, ugh!, never again, they've caused me so much grief in the past.

I frequently mooch in PC World, dunno why, their prices are atrocious for most things, most of the time.

No problem, the forums are pretty quiet so it's movie time now, ciao for now
