Hi,

I've started a new build today, installed the mobo, psu and fan, ram and graphics card. Switched it on, nothing on the screen. Here is the spec:

Gigabyte GA-p65p-ds3 motherboard

e6400 core 2 duo processor

2 x 512 mb ddr2 800 ram

galaxy 7600 gt 256mb pcie graphics card

The graphics card only has dvi outputs (2 of) so I am using the dvi to vga adapter that came with it to connect it to my vga monitor.

Also, just to let you know, the cpu fan (stock hsf) does not start straight away when the power goes on, it turns a little but then starts running a few seconds later. Is this normal due to detecting heat and then starting the fan?

I have not connected any hard disks yet, just trying to see post and bios. Please help!

Thank you

I checked to see if the graphics required additional power, but there is no connection for this on the card, I resetted the cmos, I took it all out of the case and just have it on the anti static bag with just the cpu, ram and graphics plugged in, still nothing on display

You must have missed it then, because the card requires a minimum of a 350W power supply.

Thanks for the reply grandpaBW.

My card looks nothing like that, it's not a dual core one. This is the exact same card I have:

or if that link runs out by the time you check, this one will be up for 8 days from now:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Galaxy-7600-GT-PCI...1QQcmdZViewItem

Both links are the same card.

I've looked all over the thing, can't find any sockets for additional power anywhere.

By the way, I have a 550 watt power supply.

EDIT: and I am not getting any beeps when I power on, usually isn't there one short beep when everything is ok? I've tried the speaker connection in both ways in the connections on the mboard (the speaker does not indicate which pin is +, I just put it in the same way as all the others, like the power switch and power led, which did work) just incase, still no beeps. I will check if I get any beeps with the graphics card out tomorrow, that's the earliest as it's for a family member and it's not at my house.

Thanks

I checked without the graphics card, no beeps at all. The system speaker definitely does work, tested it in another board today. Also tested the whole thing with another psu, same situation, no display or beeps (no beeps without the graphics card). I also tested both power supplies on another system and they work fine.

Are all the power plugs on the motherboard attached? Sounds like the CPU isn't powered up. For the DS3 board, note the four pin square connector on the right in addition to the 20/24 pin ATX plug at the bottom (both are white). Are both plugs for these securely attached?

sammorris, lol, I connected it and it works. SORRY! I swear it didn't mention this in any of the manuals (it just mentions the socket exists in the mboard manual), and I've used a board requiring this before. Still, my fault, sorry for wasting forum space with this.

However, all is not totally ok, the psu fan is cutting out for a few seconds every couple of seconds then starting again. I phoned the shop and the bloke said it shouldn't do this and I should bring it back.

Sorry about this, at leat I'll never make this mistake again, then again, if I'm capable of this there should be a shed load of others I'm capable of, I might be back yet...

Don't worry, many a build has been halted by that humble power connector, even my close friends and <gulp> my own! Your PSU does sound faulty though.

It was stopping in the new board and an old one earlier, but now it has been running in the new build for about 40 mins doing a memtest and it's not stopping anymore. I think I'll still take it back though, seems dodgy.

Hmm, a Power supply's fan should only be controlled by the electronics in the PSU itself usually, so the board shouldn't make any difference.
