I have a NEC DVD+-RW ND-6650A, trying to burn dual layer on DVD-R DL. getting the old disk at once error. Log is copy/pasted below. updated firmware to latest, stil no luck...any help is really appriciated.

Hi.
Edit your post by clicking the paper/pencil icon in the upper right of your post to remove your Nero serial number beginning 5C....
Ritek DL disks can be hard to burn for some burners. -R disks are difficult to burn for video for many burners and aren't recognized by many standalone players. It's best to use +R DL disks. Verbatim +R DL disks seem to be the best all around.
Nero is not a good DL disk burner. ImgBurn or DVD Decrypter are superior imo. ImgBurn is kept up to date.

The illegal disk message may indicate your burner not recognizing the disk.

1st let's edit out that serial number - at the top of log and begins w/ 5C. Don't need someone else using it.

Update Nero to 7.5.9.0a
Bunch of fixes and enhancements since the version you have. Some may have been for dual layer burning. Might help.

Not the best for dual layer media. Even though the firmware is update to date it still doesn't like this discs. Cause you also have this in the log Illegal disc
For dual layer use Verbatim only. I would also look for rated 4x or lower dual layer media on this drive - it might not do well w/ the newer 8x dual layer media.

Might also want to consider putting this on a single layer disc. Compression won't be bad. Just use Recode.

Sounds like the problem is likely to be the media, then. I'll try the other burning software, just to see ifthat works.

IMGBurn won't let me add the AVI file I have of when I went skydiving, because it is 6 plus gigs...needs to be udf, IMGburn seems to want only iso...I'll try updating Nero and see if that will fix it.

I'm thinking it's the media too.
You could run this files thru Vision and pick 'image recorder' instead. This will create an .nrg file that ImgBurn will burn.

Oh Vision is an application in Nero that converts avi's, etc to a dvd complaint file.
So I'm guessing you were burning the avi's as is - no conversion.
6 gigs of AVI would take quite a bit to convert and the size after converted may be huge - so this may not be an option.

Well, I not only tried different media, but a different type. I was having problems with the DVD-R DL, saying it couldn't start the disk at once.
Now I have the DVD+R DL (TDK) and I'm getting an error that says, "could not perform end of disk at once."
It seems to be at the beginning of burning the second layer, if I'm reading the error log correctly (pasted below). May be premature, but I'm thinking the problem isn't the media.

Hello.
As I posted above, using Nero to burn DL disks is not a wise choice. ImgBurn is a better choice.
The TDK media is either made by Ricoh or Ritek. You may be using the same media as before but under a different brand name. Use Verbatim +R DL for best results. The media isn't identified in the log for whatever reason.
Laptop burners are more problematic than desktop burners.
If you're burning NeroVision compilations or Recode compilations, either use the Image Recorder to create a Nero nrg image file and burn with ImgBurn or create a folder of DVD video files (VOBs) and burn with ImgBurn.

I created an image of the burn project w/ Nero, and then used imgburn to burn the actual disk. it did fine w/ the tdk DVD+R DL, but with the Ridata DVD-R DL I get the following error almost immediately after clicking the burn icon:

Very few people use -R DL media because most standalone players will not recognize and play back that media type. Your burner apparently doesn't recognize and like that particular -R DL media. I'm using a hacked firmware 2.42 on my laptop burner, but I don't use and never have used -R DL media. NEC firmware, official and hacked can be found here:
