I have a Dell XPS 210 which comes with the TSSTcorp TS-L632D DVD-RW. I am able to burn DVDs and erase DVD-RWs with the bundled Roxio software. I can also burn CDs in the normal Windows XP manner. However, if I try to use Nero 6.6.1.4 or 7.5.7.0, I cannot burn DVDs or erase DVD-RWs. The message I receive is "Cannot perform start disc at once".

I have also tried reinstalling the OS (Windows Media Center 2005) and not installing the Roxio software, in case the Roxio was interfering with Nero, and the same occurs.

I checked I have the latest firmware DE03.

Anyone have any ideas on what's wrong here?

Here's the log:

My computer uses ACHI so when I look under the IDE controller, there are no "Primary IDE" or "Secondary IDE" channels to change.

Does Nero not work well with ACHI?

I tried changing the BIOS so that the SATA uses ATA instead of ACHI but this gives me blue screen of death on startup.

I had also tried slowing the burning before, and that didn't work.

Any other ideas? Thanks!

I think the problem is the ACHI interface for the SATA drives. I did the following to get it to work:

1. Changed the BIOS setup to use ATA instead of ACHI in the drives section of the setup.
2. Installed Windows XP Pro from a Dell OEM CD that I had. I booted it from CD, deleted and reinstated the C drive partition as part of the install.
3. Installed the Dell drivers from the driver disc provided with the PC
4. Installed Nero Ultra

And now it's burning away.

I don't know whether this would have worked using the Windows XP media center CD instead ie it's possible that the conflict was with the Media Center software and not the ACHI. However, I could not get XP Pro to install on the PC without disabling ACHI (it would always give me a blue screen on install).

Hi sorry it took me so long to get back to you but i have been in touch with dell over three to four nights now trying to sort this out about the DMA and apparently they realised that the xps harddrive is so small that the workings are more like a laptop so it does not have DMA it works on poi so i tryed uninstalling software to find conflicts trying different codecs etc and finally i changed to ridata discs and FFDShow codec and no other codecs so they don`t clash as i know that codec packs are not good and it is running perfect and playing lovely in the dvd player no more problems thank goodness so i hope this helps other people as i know how frustrating it can be but i would highly recommend ridata discs i get them from digitalpromo.co.uk
