I ran into a disk that played one show via normal Phillips DVD reader and my local TV and showed another when running through AnyDVD and CloneDVD. AnyDVD noted it was a 2 layer disk. I could not find the program which came up by default on my standard replay setup at all on CloneDVD2... just junk stuff such as a couple wrong shows.

Any suggestions as to what I'm runnng into and how I can fix it? I'm not an old hand at this business...

I have no idea what you're asking or what you're doing. Can you explain it, fully, in detail?

Do you mean that, when you preview in CloneDVD2, that it plays one show, and not the one that starts up by default when you play the DVD? The reason why is the preview in CloneDVD2 normally shows the longest/largest title first (usually, the main movie, since it's mainly for ripping movies). Just click to highlight the other titlesets to see what they contain. There is also a scissors under the preview window that allows very basic, chapter-based cuts.

AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 are used to copy DVDs. If something on the source DVD is something you don't want, you might be able to eliminate it by unchecking the appropriate titlesets in the "Title Configuration" screen, which is the second screen. Otherwise, CloneDVD2 might not be the most appropriate tool and you should look at an editor such as Womble MPEG or DVD wizard. Bear in mind that if you cut enough unwanted stuff out, you might not have to bother with the expense of using DL discs.

Edit: AnyDVD, at least the old versions, has an option to "Jump to main movie" somewhere in it. Maybe this is causing the problem. The "main movie" is, I think, whatever is the longest item on the DVD. You will need to re-rip the original to correct this, or use an editor on the material if it's still on your hard drive.

-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

I apologize for my lack of clarity. I'll try again.

I was watching a DVD for entertainment on my home system, a Phillips reader feeding a standard TV via the AV input port. I wanted to save a portion of that DVD.

Earlier this year, I obtained AnyDVD and CloneDVD2, and it has worked OK on the few DVDs I've wanted to rip a rew scenes from. This time it was different.

My DVD drive is a Sony DVD RW DRU 400A, several years old.

With the DVD in this drive and AnyDVD enabled, it examined the disk and reported it to be normal with DRM and CSS encryption and that it was a 2 layer disk.

Opening CloneDVD, it showed 13 titles when selecting either Copy DVD Titles or Clone DVD. Only the first two had any content, the rest were empty. The first title contained about 1.3 hours, the second about .2 hours.

When selecting the first title, the 1.3 hour one, the preview window played some other movie -- an older movie from the same studio -- not the one that played on my "home" system. The whole movie was there. The second title had snippets of other movies from the same studio, which may have been trailers; I didn't look at them very carefully.

I've read all the instructions that came with CloneDVD and the Afterdawn tutorials. I haven't seen any parts that address this kind of problem. Also, I haven't found much, if anything, that address the "2 layer" issue.

What I want to know is where did the movie go that I watched on the home system? Could it have something to do with the 2 layer disk? What can I do to make it available to CloneDVD?

I hope that is a little more explicit.

Thanks for your attention. Much appreciated.

Having lots of blank titlesets is common. Those are usually components of unreadable-sector-based copy-protection like Sony Arccos. You said the whole movie was in the first titleset (or the long one, that is). It sounds like something is making the movie skip the part you want. If so, check that AnyDVD setting I mentioned in my first post. It migh be under the section about skipping adverts and trailers.

BTW, are you using the latest AnyDVD and CloneDVD2? That might be an issue too.

As I mentioned earlier, you can use the scissors to cut out the unwanted parts of that title, provided the parts you want to keep are all together.

The source disc is very likely a 2-layer a.k.a. DVD-9, or DL disc. Almost everything being put out in the last few years is on DVD-9s.

Failing that, you can use AnyDVD itself to rip to your hard disk. Try it with the "Removed unreferenced and blank cells" checked. You can then use PowerDVD, Windows Media Player, or just about anything else to preview the DVD on your hard disk. If everything seems ok, use CloneDVD2 or Nero to burn the Video_ts folder to disc.

Thanks for all the info.
My AnyDVD is the latest revision, updated yesterday.
My CloneDVD is the latest revision; I just checked.

One correction to your reply. The one title containing a full length movie has NONE of the movie that plays on my home system, only an old previous release from the studio. The movie I want is nowhere in the titles listed by CloneDVD. I watched all the preview pages. So there's nothing to scissor out.

Thanks for your help. I'll try something else and give up if it starts taking too much time... It'e not that important.
