Hi -

I just got a 512mb X1800 XT, how do I overclock it? I have never OC a video card, I know absolutely nothing about it and I'm hoping you guys could help me learn something new. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

iv not done an ati card but the theory is the same.

get atitool first and it is easy, it will auto detect the optimal settings, then you could try to push it a bit higher if you wanted.

note
watch your temps as they will go higher when ocing.

Alongside of that, make sure your power supply is good enough or else your system might crash as it did with mine. Got a lot of restarts. Check for artifacts a lot using the same ATI tool.

ATITool and Catalyst's own overdrive feature are both capable of overclocking cards. My success with this process has been limited so I haven't done it much muyself, but newer cards and better power supplies may be able to help nowadays. It's actually expected to get restarts during the testing process. A good way to overclock is to find your card's limit (limits are very variable with CPUs dependent upon voltage, but I personally wouldn't touch the voltages on a GPU) when it crashes, then reboot and set it just under that limit, so it's stable but as fast as it can be. You will without question need a good PSU to do it though. Just watch out for temperatures (something else both these programs do). If they get too high you run the risk of damaging a card, since Graphics cards run closer to their maximum temperature than CPUs do at their normal settings (a good normal temperature for a CPU is below 55C max out of an 80 maximum, a normal temperature for an X1800 is about 85C max out of a 100 maximum) less room to expand so just be a bit cautious and methodical.

Thanks guys.

I downloaded that ATI tool, pretty cool stuff. Can I burn up my card if I push it to hard, or will ATI's reset dealie kick in and save the day? I've never overclockd a card and I realy don' wish to destroy my new card.

Also, my friend just got a WIFI connection is his apartment above mine, I'm considering leaching off of him. I have a couple questions. I've never had a WIFI connection, I'm kinda new to all this. Right now I'm pulling dow 6-10+ mb a sec w/ comcast. I know I'm not going to get that leaching, do you guys have a idea as to what my speeds will be like? Is there a cap on a wireless conection? What kind a wireless card should I get?

I'm also about to put together my first pc, I noticed ASUS boards now have WIFI built in, should I get a WIFI board or WIFI card? I also hear people can get in to your pc through a WIFI conncetion, how vulnerable will I be? What can they do if they get in? And most importantly, how do I prevent this?

As long as you haven't upped the voltages, the card should be fine, if you've pushed things too hard you'll just get a crash / VPU recover, no physical damage should occur.
