HELP!! I've downloaded the Trial version of the most recent version of Nero. I ripped my CD using a ripping program and then saved it to my hard drive. When I open those files in Nero, it's VERY confusing.

Background: I have a DVD that has 4 episodes on each DVD. They were pretty much split into 4 episodes when ripped, but Nero changes all that. Instead of the files opening up in 4 separate espisodes in Nero, each episode is sometimes split into up to parts, making it extremely difficult to figure out what parts go with what episode! This is the TV series 24, which means all the actors wear the same clothes, b/c everything is happening in real time for 4 hrs. My question is: is this because I have the trial version??

It's maddening - I'll open a file in Windows Explorer named VTS_04_1, and when I open that same file in Nero, Nero names it VTS_04.0001. Okay, no problem so far. But then when I go back to WE to open the next file (appears as VTS_04_2 in WE), it comes up in Nero as the same name as the file I just opened (VTS_04.0001), so I have now have two different files with the same name! To make matters worse, every time I add a new file to Nero, it changes the names of files I already added to Nero so you can't keep track of them.

To top it all off, the files open in Nero in random order! You can't rename them or make a folder for each 1-hour episode, making it nearly impossible to piece everything together in order and make your movie to burn on CD. Are these problems rectified in the full version??? Please tell me this program isn't this difficult and that the only reason things are this way is because it's a trial. I looked around to see if I could find info about Nero's trial version features but to no avail.

When you say open in Nero... which app of Nero. What are you trying to do? When you say CD do you mean DVD?

Sorry -- when I said CD I meant DVD. I copied video from a DVD onto my HD so I could edit it then burn. After I edit the scenes, I want to burn the video back onto a DVD. I'm using Nero Vision to open the files & edit them. It's the most recent version from the Nero website (I think it's version 7 something).

Do you actually want to edit scenes or are you just trying to back up/separate the individual episodes?

I want to edit scenes. But not b/c of the size of the files but to make it family friendly. I don't even necessarily want the scenes separated or anything (unless it comes that way). If I could get all 4 episodes as one file, that would be fine, too, but I doubt it'll copy that way.

For that kind of editing NV is not your best choice, nor are VOBs in general.

Maybe some help here though:

Thanks, MysticE. The files did come up SO much better . . . but now I have another issue. When I try to edit, the program freezes then shuts down! What happens is, I select a section of video to cut, and then the program brings up a Save As box to save the edited section. When I click Save, the program freezes and I get, "MPEG Video Wizard DVD has encountered an error and needs to close . . ." I've restarted my computer to see if that would fix it. Nada. AAAH!! This is so frustrating. This can't be this hard. So the files are coming up better, but now I can't edit at all b/c the program won't stay open! I have a Dell Dimension E310 with 1GB RAM and a Pentium 4 processor. It's only 4 months old, so I don't think the issue is that my computer doesn't have enough space or memory. Any ideas???

That's okay; I got it figured out finally. This program's really detailed, so the terminology can be really confusing. The help section said to use the Trim Cut button to save it (which was what was shutting down the program). When I used the Save button in the Timeline instead, it works fine and saves it as a project. WHEW! Editing is SO much easier in this program, for sure! Thanks for referring me to it. I have the trial version for a month so I'm hoping I can get most of this edited before end of January!
