I was wondering what you guys think of the PS2's future? With the next gen systems coming out and the PS2 being the oldest still relevant system. I was wondering what people think of it's future and if they think it has one. My buddy has a theory that God of War 2 will be the systems last horah. My personal belief is that it may be nearing the end of it's riegn but will be relevant for longer than most people think. Heres why I think this. There is the Wii, that I think is going to be sweet and I think that It will sell well due to the price tag. The only thing about it is the controller that I personally think is awsome, may turn enough "gamers" off to it. The 360 already has a decent library of games and great graphics. It does however have a pretty hefty price tag, no real backwords compatability to speak of, and I'm sure plenty of bugs due to the usual "sell products before they are finished" technique that has made Microsoft so loved. Then there is the PS3. Great graphics, lots of power, sleak design. BUT, a price tag waay out of the average consumers price range all for the sake of this SONY<-- Blueray technology. Blueray discs hold a lot of data and it seems like a good business strategy. This would make the ps3 sell due to the fact that it is the cheapest Blueray player available. It worked with the PS2 with dvds. I see a problem though and that problem is that a Blueray disc, while it does hold a lot of data, succeeds at essentially being a fancy Sony proprietary version of an HDdvd. HD dvd players are much cheaper than blueray players and don't run a risk of going the way of the mini disc or UMD and become cool looking coasters in a couple of years. This whole factor makes me doubt that people are going to rush to buy these just for "blueray technology" that sony has pulled out of there rears. Has anyone noticed that everyone buying up PS3s are putting them on E-bay? The people that can afford to get them off of there obviously have money to burn on pointless technology if they are spending 3gs for the bad boys. These crazy people don't represent the average consumer.

Due to the factors above, I believe that the PS2 will remain relevant for longer than many think. Look at it this way; The SNES is regarded by most<-- (I don't want to start any arguments here) as the greatest system ever made. Why? Because it had great games, the biggest library, and one of the longest reigns ever. The SNES remained relevant long after it's hardware was outdated and old. That hardware was really pushed as far as it could go towards the end too. Games were made for it right up to the release of the N64. The Playstation which was out before the 64 didn't generate much interest until the 64 was released and that was when it took off. The SNES is still what most people played even when Playstation was first made. I think that the Playstation 2 has many of the same traits as the SNES. The largest library, the oldest still relevant system, outdated hardware that despite it's age is still being pushed to the limit, multi-platform games released on next gens are still released for it, new games still being made, and a good solid fan base. This system has what it takes to go down in history as the next SNES so to speak.

This brings me to the future of the PS2. I beleive that while this may be towards the end of the PS2s reign we will still see plenty of things to come. I think that the future of the system mainly lies in reflex style games like ddr or guitar hero that have been selling so well. Or maybe wierd kareoke type games or maybe games that really make good<-- use of the eye toy. Games like this will keep the PS2 kickin for a little while and ultimately I think fans of the system will keep it alive for quite some time. You'll have to excuse my grammar. I am really tired but can't sleep lol. These are just my thoughts, and I was wondering what some of you guys thought.

well PS3 as I have been told will not let you play PS2 or PS1 games.

For me that means no PS3. I don't have the money to rebuy games.
I think many people might be in the same boat.

I would hope that Sony realizes this situation and continues to bring great thigs to the PS2.

Well I will tell you what will happen to ps2.
you can see that despite all the 360,Wii & PS3
1)PS2 IS OUTSELLING ALL OF THEM!
Unlike the PSX, PS2 has enough potential to stay up for 3-4Yrs
& will definatley rule for a 3 TO 4 years.
Game Devolopers can't overlook the fact that:
2)THERE ARE MORE PS2 IN ANY HOUSE THAN ANY OTHER CONSOLE.
Ps2's great various base of PSX & PS2 Titles gonna keep it goin
and People like Criterion are even developing EXCLUSIVE Titles.
AND as for the Family console thingy with title like SingStar,GiutarHero & Eye toy & Buzz are out there and are in DEVELOPEMENT AS SEQUELS & PREQUELS.
Now what does it prove it proves that who needs a 360, Wii & PS3 WHEN
3)THERE ALREADY HAS BEEN A CONSOLE FOR THE FAMILY AND THE NAME OF THAT CONSOLE IS PlayStation(r)2

P.S U may think think i am some kind of PS2MANIAC FREAK, but looking at PS2 IT'S WORTH IT!

I didn't see myself as a PS fan but I guess I am. I have a PS1,2,3. No Xbox no Gamecube, but I do have an Atari 2600.

Anyway whoever said PS3 can't play PS2 or 1 games is mistaken by a mile. It CAN play old titles BUT some have problems like sound not working or controller mapping isn't correct, and some don't even work. That's constantly being cured by firmware updates.

And to say something on topic, the future of the PS2 is not closing. Like NHS2008 said, look at the library of games and the past exclusives. GTA(no longer exclusive), Bully(wasn't exclusive but cancelled for xbox), Final Fantasy, Ace Combat(i dont think it's exclusive anymore), and Ratchet & Clank to name a few. Sure it does sound like all the titles have gone the other direction but that doesn't mean Xbox instantly will last(sorry gamecube but Mario is you're best exclusive and no ports).

For nextgen who knows. It just officially beagn between all 3 consoles. Xbox 360 obviously had a headstart. Wii had more production and it came out 2 days later (thats 200 000 consoles in Sony language, too bad for delay). And PS3 is last up. I think it had something to do again with Blue-ray laser diode. I also heard the PS3 is bricking. Atleast with the last shipment is what I heard. But overall we still have many years to come before we announce a winner. And I think the PS2 will have more years to come. Unlike Xbox, PS1 was still into production 3-4 years after PS2 came out. I think this will be the same case with the PS2.
