Im looking to upgrade with some extra ram, i'm curious how much better things will run. I'm especially curious to know how much better my pc games and art programs shall run. These are my current specs:

Intel pentium 4 2.4 ghz
512mb ram
radeon 9700

Right now I can run half life 2 on medium settings on 1024 X 720 with an inconsistent framerate and slow down especially during explosions. Im curious to know just how much better things will run if I upgrade to a have a total of one gig of ram(double what I have now). Will I be able to run half life 2 using my old settings with no slow down and a consistent frame rate?

it wont make your games run any quicker, that has more to do with your graphics card, it will help with loading and switching apps/games.

in the art package it will help you loads with image rendering and such.

i have a gig and i want more. hey what can you do? :)

I'm thinking another 512MB stick would help you out. I haven't played HL2 in some time, but I'm thinking if you're using XP, only having 512MB ram would cause HL to get quite a bit of page file usage.

I remember running it fine on my 9700 Pro, so I don't see that being too much of a problem. Your processor might be limiting it, but during explosions sounds like the computer is using the page file then and that's why you're lagging.

I would try disabling all programs, etc... and maybe go as far as to get rid of the XP theme to free up some memory. After this run the game and see if you see any type of performance increase. If you do, it's probably a RAM issue.
