Computer Won't boot past windows screen

This computer is pretty old. It's an gateway model w/ a AMD 1gz proc. Once it loads past the Windows screen, it only shows the mouse for a long time and nothing happens. Any suggestions?

Nothing, it says safe mode all over the screnn, but then it just stops there and it doesn't load...

what windows? how about last known working configuration? if using more than 1 stick of ram, try 1 stick at a time to see if have a bad stick.

it's Windows Xp pro, the last known cofiguration won't work either.I'm going to try taking out a stick.

did u install windows xp on the computer recently or did it come with the os on it? because win xp needs a certain amount of specs to work properly and u might have other applications trying to load at the same time as when ur computer is loading. that may be a reason y ur computer is stoping like that. if possible try to go to run and type in "msconfig". once after doing that click to "startup" on the far right, and uncheck all the un-nessesary applications you dont need. hope that helps a bit

ddp, i have tried every possible RAM combination and every one of them alone in all three slots... Took quite a bit of time actually, but it still seems to stop after the Windows Screen and just shows the mouse. I was assuming it might have been the drivers for the video card, but since I get a picture in the beginning I don't think that is it.
bojan087, I did that when everything was loaded on there and nothing new has been introduced to the computer lately, so I don't think that's the problem, thanks anyways
Anything else it might be?

mine did this once when i was first played with overclocking, at least thats what i think caused it. the windows logo, and blue bar, went normaly but then instead of the login, nothing, just the pointer. anyway i cleared the cmos and it worked, i dont know why. but it might be worth a try.
if you dont know how, on your mobo near the bat there will be three pins with a jumper bridging two of them. remove the bat, then switch the jumper so it is bridging to the other pin. leave it for a min, put the jumper back on the original pins, replace the bat and away you go, hopfuly.

marsey, if using the jumper to clear the cmos than you don't need to remove the battery. disconnect the external powercord before clearing the cmos as some boards still have even tho windows shutdown pc.

always unplug the power cable before removing the case cover.

Thanks again, but nothing has happened. I've cleared the cmos and unplugged the storage hard drive. Nothing happened though.
ddp, I have a wireless linksys card attached to it and an audio card also. The sound card's chipset is CMI 8738 the box has no brand on there. This is the linksys card.

do you have a spare hd or can borrow 1 so can load windows on to see if still have problem as might be a software problem not hardware

Yeah, I can reload windows onto another hd. I guess this might take about a day since. Thanks for the help. Will get back with results tomorrow, thanks for the help.

I reloaded windows onto the computer with the spare hard drive. It worked and i reinstalled all the drivers. It seems to work now. I guess it was the hard drive. Thanks again to all who contributed.
Just wondering, if it happens again what else could it be?

copy your info off the sick hd & reformat it & reload windows on it as might be software corruption not hardware.
