I have FlyDvdRipper, which seems to have this capability. I'm very new to all this, and I found the AVI torrents the easiest to use. I'd like to make it easy to use the torents for others who are new like me.
If you are going to rip a dvd to an .avi format, i suggest you look here : Gordian Knot XviD Ripping guide
Xvid is the smallest, most stable video format, and Gordian Knot is the best ripper once you learn how it works.

No, it means it's a XviD file, so you need the appropriate codec installed (XviD) to watch it.
If it says XviD in a title, then it means it's an AVI file encoded with XviD, and that you need to have that codec to be able to watch it.
Wether or not that file was made with GK is something that only the ripper knows, though i can assure you most proper rippers use GK or AutoGK to rip their stuff.
