I have a Plexter DVD recorder and I am having trouble producing dual layer recordings. So far nothing but coasters. The media is WINDATA and the burning software is Nero 6.0.1.4 with the updates. My computer is a 3.2 pentium 4 , hyperthreading, and a gig of ram. I ripped a copy off of American Pie: The Naked Mile, using AnyDVD and Nero Recode. The result was unplayable. Anybody got any ideas, I am open for suggestion. Thanks

As you probably know, DVD quality is dictated greatly by the quality of media, as well as the burner and burning software.

Dual-layer disks, since they are more complex, make these things even more important. The disks you are using are from an off-brand manufacturer, and are probably not very good media. When burning DVD movies, games, etc. always use good media: Ridek, TY, Verbatim, etc.

Your drive, being a Plextor, is probably all right, but you never know. Many DVD burners have problems with the area around the Layer Break in dual layer media, and as a resuly they do not burn correctly.

Your software may also be an issue; trash Nero, and use ImgBurn. ImgBurn is the superior burning program, and it's also free. Not to say that Nero isn't good, but ImgBurn is really the best you can get.

Try all of these things, but really, i think that the problem is your media.

Brilliant!

CloneCD is the perfect tool to make backup copies of your music and data CDs, regardless of copy protection. CloneCD's award-winning user interface allows you to copy almost any CD in just a few mouse clicks.

Since the release of 5.0, CloneCD is not only able to copy CDs but also all DVD formats, such as DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD+R Dual Layer and DVD-RAM. The movies are copied 1:1 and therefore not modified (compressed). Note that to copy movie DVDs you also require AnyDVD.
CloneCD also works with other formats such as ISO and UDF files and copies CDs/DVDs with the new SafeDisc 3 Copy Protection System. CloneCD allows you to create perfect 1:1 copies of your valuable original compact discs. Should your copy-protected music CD not play in your car audio, the backup created by CloneCD will.

Slysoft combine knowledge and innovation with many years of experience and direct communication with customers to provide constant improvements, therefore making CloneCD the highest quality copying application around.

Hi, Ireland you sure like Clone Cd lol..well getting to the topic, before wasting any dual layer dvd you could provide us with some very usefull infromation:

-Speed of the burn
-If possible download DVD identifier and tell us the brand media.

I had a similar case before, with really odd results: I correctly burned with Nero some movies on a Verbatim DL dvd, the result was unplayable, then I burned it on a Ricoh DL dvd, odd enough even the same conditions were met (burning program, speed, same movie) this time the result was good. It seems like my Dvd player was a little picky, lets hope the same does not happen to you.

I highly recommend before proceding with installing new software, provides us that information so we can look for other posible source of the problem.

I have yet to burn a decent Dl no matter what brand with Nero without something wrong. My main progs are Clone DvD2 and Imgburn. The one thing about Nero I have found is the disk might play fine once or twice but after that generally starts failing. I've found the best DL media to be Verbatim used on my burners which consist of Plextor Benq Liteon Samsung and best burning power at 2.5x no matter what the rated speed. The faster the burn the harder on the layer break that starts the down hill trend IMHO.For a new user in my own opinion would be to start out with Clone that puts in the layer break or Imgburn to make sure you can make adecent backup.I have a Denin player that is the pickiest player I own . If it won't play a back up I know it's one of two things media or somethings changed in my set up.

I suspect most problems with burning DL discs to be either the media itself or the software. I have heard many people say that the only DL media you can trust is Verbatim. No one else. But I couldn't resist the 15 Memorex 2.4X DL discs for $20 at Best Buy this week, so I bought a pack and I had no problems burning and playing the disc. It's made by Ritek and I used Nero 7. I suggest you upgrade to the latest Nero, and considering you are using crappy media, try burning it at the slowest speed.
