I know people usually post about about DVD problems but I have one with Nero involving trying to make a simple DVD Video. Nothing fancy (or illegal) just some clips that I have collected from the past few months.

Yes I have a older version of Nero so you know, like 6.1.0.0 or something.

Anyways heres the log of the error:

The likely problem is incd running. You should dump it. Also you should update to 6.6.0.18. That 6.6.0.7 version was not so good.

InCD v4.3.23.2
InCD is an integrated packet writing solution that has the most stability, ease of use, and compatibility, across all Windows operating systems. Packet writing is the method of writing data in small increments (by packets) onto a rewritable media. InCD is made by Ahead Softare and it's the ideal partner for Nero Burning ROM.

Automatically launched when Windows is booted, InCD provides flexible drive letter access to the CD-RW, CD-MRW, DVD RW, DVD-RW or DVD MRW drive providing simple drag and drop or direct save options within applications. Files can be saved, renamed and deleted, just as with other rewritable storage mediums such as floppy or hard disk. InCD is fully compliant with the UDF 1.50 standard in legacy mode and UDF 1.02 for MRW.

InCD works exclusively with rewriteable medias (CD-RW, CD-MRW, DVD-RW, DVD RW or DVD MRW). Medias which can only be written once cannot be written using InCD.

Get rid of it.

Greetings all. Have a problem and I'm hoping one of you can help me. I made the foolish move a few days ago of updating my Nero to the newest 6.6.1.4. From that point on - I've coastered probably 6 DVD's. I've used the brand successfully in the burner before. I've also been able to burn with InstantCopy, but I've always liked Nero better.

Can someone good at reviewing these logs please tell me why I'm having such a problem? Oh, and Gwen - I followed your advice - and deinstalled the 6.6.1.4 and backpedaled down to 6.6.1.18 (?) which I've read is far more stable - and will still interact with DVD Shrink.

Any help is appreciated. This is the Nero Log I get from Recode:

Good Call!! I'll look at it for you.

Focus or tracking error

Notice that everything was working correctly from 3:40:40 up until 4:05:47.

20 minutes and 7 seconds of happy burning until something happened that caused your burner's laser to "loose the groove".

20 minutes at 2.4X, that's getting really close to the outer edge of the blank disc. Also the process that was taking place was the "finalizing" of the DVD:
Quote:
4:05:47 PM #47 Phase 176 File APIProgress.cpp, Line 276

Finalizing the disc failed
So once this happened Nero detects that an SCSI error has occurred:
Quote:
Status: 0x04 (0x01, SCSI_ERR)
HA-Status 0x00 (0x00, OK)
TA-Status 0x02 (0x01, SCSI_TASTATUS_CHKCOND)
Sense Key: 0x05 (KEY_ILLEGAL_REQUEST)

I see this as a case of a burner going bad. (Unlikely) or a bad spot on your blank (Likely) that caused the burner's laser to loose sight of the prerecorded groove.

Some suggestions:

Try some different media. Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim or Hitachi Maxell (Made In Japan).

Set your target as a HDD location and then burn separately from the Recode process.

Do a simulated burn with Nero to test. It still has to focus on the blank so this works OK as a test.

Reduce your target size from DVD-5 to 4300 MB to avoid the edge of the disc.

And get your DMA enabled.

Thanks for tthe input. The burner is about three years old, (HP 200e, firmware upgraded to 200j - attached through a USB 2.0 port) and has been fine so far. I have been burning successfully on Philips DVD+R, until the recent problems. I burned a movie onto an HP DVD-RW, using Pinnacle Instant Copy just fine.

I went to go check on DMA and here is what I found:

IDE/ATAPI - Intel 8280 1DB Ultra ATA STorage Controller 24 CB, driver 4.0.1001.0 Dated 7/2/2001

Primary IDE Device:
0 -
DT-"Grayed out" auto detect, TM-DMA if available, CTM-Ultra DMA Mode 5
1 -
DT- auto detect, TM-DMA if available, CTM-Not Applicable
Secondary IDE Device:
0 -
DT-"Grayed out" auto detect, TM-DMA if available, CTM-PIO Mode
1 -
DT-"Grayed out" auto detect, TM DMA if available, CTM-Ultra DMA Mode 2

It's my understanding that this whole deal will run better if DMA is enabled on everything - but not sure how to change the PIO mode item. Would I have to reinstall the burner drivers?

DMA is not the problem here. Yes you should have it enabled on all IDE drives.

Here is the one that needs fixed:
Quote:
Secondary IDE Device:
0 -
DT-"Grayed out" auto detect, TM-DMA if available, CTM-PIO Mode
On My PC, the Transfer Mode box is a drop-down menu that lets you select DMA or PIO.

You can delete the secondary channel IDE controller. Then reboot. Your system will reinstall the controller.

If I were you I would first use one of the media brands I listed. Then I would replace the Samsung CD burner with a new DVD burner. That way you could stop burning through a USB cable.

Your Phillips is ready for retirement and new burners are so cheap now that there is no reason not to replace them when they start having problems. Wouldn't it be nice to have a spare that you could install and see if that fixes this?

This is typical of what to get:

Lite-On 20X DVD Burner with LightScribe from Newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827106055

For media I like Taiyo-Yuden -Rs but for this burner I would use T-Y 16X +Rs. Try www.supermediastore.com for these.

Thanks. I got the DMA issue straightened out with your help. Everything is now consistent.

I'm thinking you're right on swapping out the burners and going internal - the one you linked to looks like an excellent deal as well ! I had been eyeing an HP 840 with Lightscribe, but the Lite-on from NewEgg is about half the price.

Hopefully thai gets me back to a fully automated process.

Same to you!

That lightscribe is interesting. I'm going to get one at some point. The HP looks really good too. It would be cool to do some nice art on the DVDs rather than marking them up with a Sharpie. I do like my T-Y discs and as far as I know, you can only lightscribe on HP media.

Hey Garmoon, I don't know what it is, maybe global warming, but this winter has just sucked here in the Pacific Northwest. My power was off for six days. Now I own a new Honda, a 7000 watt generator instead of the motorcycle I was saving for. I was going to get a Ducati 1098... Which I probably still will, just not as soon.

Happy New Year!
Frank

Actually verbatim makes lightscribe dvds. My LG will do them but the product is monochromal and just not up to snuff, for any lightscribe media. If you do, do them with a B&W image as the contrast will be better! Happy New Year.

@fasfrank

We know all about generators here. I still haven't bought one because our lights very seldom go out. Even after Katrina and Rita, only without for 5 hours and 2 hours respectively. Back in '92, Andrew was 2 days. If that ever repeats I will buy one. Gets awfully hot at 90 deg & 100% humidity in summer w/o AC.

Hey Guys...Guess who is back ! I picked up the LiteOn 20x from Newegg and was loving life until I encountered this. Anyone have any thoughts? I've burned probably five or six dvd's on the new burner since I got it (and it is much faster and quieter than the HP 200e it replaced)
