What I want is to backup my copy of All the King's Men to a DL disc setting the booktype as DVD ROM. Here's what's in the toolbx: the last version of Decrypter and Shrink, the most recent updates of AnyDVD and CloneDVD, Nero 6,the latest update of Ripit4Me,and my DL burner is a Sony DRX 820u. I can burn a perfect copy with AnyDVD/CloneDVD,but can't chage the booktype. AnyDVD/Nero Recode does not work,Recode says main movie is not compressable.Decrypter does not list(support)my burner.I don't have much experience with Ripit4Me.Any suggestions?
Thanx for any help in advance, and Merry Christmas to all.

@Elliott....... that was a very good thread about DL burning..... but Bigbadjim want's to booktype the drive to burn +R media to DVD-ROMs so it will be more compatible with players. Sooooo here are methods of making your drive to booktype to DVD-ROMs:
http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php
Here are directions on how to Bitset or Change the BookType with DVD Decrypter on Plextor, NEC, BenQ, LG, LITE-ON, Nu Tech/QSI and Ricoh Burners. There is no one best bitsetting utility out there, if it works for your burner it works. You can also use Nero to Change the BookType or BitSet, check out our NERO Booktype Tutorial for directions how. Note: Only Nero SmartStart/Express version 6.3.1.6 or above support BitSet or Changing the BookType. If Nero and DVD Decrypter does not Change the BookType or BitSet your DVD+R to DVD-ROM please refer to other Bitsetting Programs
How to tell if the disc you burned is already booktyped to DVD-ROM? - Read the disc using programs such as DVDInfoPro, Nero CD-DVD Speed, DVD Identifier, or DVD Decrypter to read your (already) burned DVD Media.
and here is your burner:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters.php?...0&Search=Search
your drive is shown here as a OEM BenQ! this means it should be able to be Booktyped to DVD-ROMs! use DVDInfoPro to set your booktyping:

I used this same method to make my Philips 8631 (also a OEM BenQ) to booktype to DVD-ROMS... and it works! just set your +R(W) media to DVD-ROM! and your burner will always be set that way to burn all your +R(W) media to DVD-ROMs. You won't have to set the programs to do it! It's done automatically.... if it takes! good luck. each drive may be different! And I don't have a Sony burner but my Philips is an OEM BenQ like yours.... so I am assuming it will do the same as mine.

@Elliott....... it's not you...... it's what Bigbadjim was asking about. I'm happy that you never had a problem with Booktyping..... neither did I. ;-)

Just a note, some burners automatically burn +R media to DVD-Rom, without having to do anything. I found this out through experience.
Our new laptop came with a GSA-4084N burner, which I knew by the lettering was a LG. I tried to use DVDInfoPro to booktype and got the "does not support" message. However, after I burnt onto a +R disc, I used DvdInfoPro to confirm and sure enough the booktype had changed to Dvd-Rom. Worked in my Toshiba Dvd player which ONLY reads booktyped media.
Seasons greetings to all.

@mackdl......just to let you know..... DVDDecrypter can set your LG drive to booktype all the time....... but at the same token if you burn with Nero and set the setting it will booktype automatically for all the +R(W) media! and your drive doesn't have to be set to booktype to DVD-ROMs. but I set mine anyways...... because I use many burning programs and most of them do not set the booktyping. You must have used Nero which automatically sets booktyping to DVD-ROMs for those drives that are able to booktype! I would use DVDDecrypter to set your drive to booktype all the time! Just my 2 cents, mackdl!

Nero will automatically sets the "booktype" to DVD-ROM once you've set "booktype" to "automatic" via it's settings. That is.. if your DVD burner is capable of booktyping. That is the main reason why I prefer to burn all my VIDEO_TS backups via Nero Burning Rom 90% and the other 10% are done with ImgBurn or DVD Decrypter.
With Nero, it automatically changed all my DVD+R and DVD+R DL to DVD-ROM using both SONY DRU 710 (a rebadged SOHW-1633S Litey) and LiteOn SHW-160P6S drives. However, with ImgBurn or DVD Decrypter, I have to manually change the "booktype" prior to the burning process. Not a big deal, but still prefer Nero to do it's thing automatically.
Best of luck!!

@IHoe,
Our laptop is a Compaq , Oem LG burner. Nero didn't come with it, Sonic did, but I haven't used it and am contemplating deleting it. Most of the bloatware is already gone.
When I tried DvdInfoPro's bitsetting and got the "does not support" error, I searched the net and found this thread at CDFreaks. Chef's response of there is no bitsetting possible with LGs is false, because I also have a LG 4163b and know it does. After reading the final post, I thought "what the heck", I'll try it.
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=198832
I also recall reading where "some" newer burners do not have to be set. I wasn't meaning to derail this thread, only suggesting to bigbadjim perhaps his does too. However, I would try a single layer disc for testing.

i have Sonic my dvd plus on one computer,to tell ye the truth i like it..
not a bad program..with a hp-tsstcorp dvdrw drive and all the movies are set to booktype dvd-rom i rip and burn..
using CloneDVD and AnyDVD to do my movies..and if another copy is needed i use sonic and put the movie in the dvd rom,and use my burner to burn..
as soon as the copy to disk is done, sonic checks the burn disk against the master..
i am using version v7 build 2.6.21b it does a good job...

- i have a GWA-4082N in my laptop, and i'm glad i saw your post, i just checked my Nero log and there's nom booktyping info in there from last night's burns. just going to reboot into Windows and check one of those +R discs as i've forgotten how i set this burner to booktype..
extract from my Nero log - Quote: Recorder: HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082N, Media type: DVD+R
Disc Manufacturer ID: RICOHJPN, Media Type ID: R03, Product revision number: 4
Disc Application Code: 0, Extended Information Indicators: 7
but no mention of booktyping... i'll have to reboot and check, then update this post....i have a feeling mine auto-booktypes too, (hence why i seem to have forgotten how i did it) :)
edit- yup, i checked, my 4082N just auto-booktypes, nothing shows in Nero when burning or hen looking wunder the 'choose recorder' tab in Nero ie no booktype settings show up there.
dvd identifier shows that burnt +R's from this burner do get booktyped to dvd-rom so my work in this thread is done :)
