Movies arn't down converted to 1080i over component because of HDCP. HDCP causes resolutions to be cut in half not changed from Progressive to interlaced.

one of my friends who is very well versed in hd technology told me that HD-DVD players and Blu-ray players do not disply anything but 1080p through hdmi. there is no other option. im not sure if this is true or not because nor him or i actually own a hd or blu ray player, weve just been fucking around with his ps3. if this is true it just proves my point about the 1080p rollout being totally about planned obsolescents and has nothing to do with consumer demand.

He's pulling your leg. The Toshiba HD-A1 and 2nd gen HD-A2 can't even output 1080p thru HDMI. The current BluRay players can output 1080p thru HDMI but if your HDTV can't accept a 1080p signal then you have the option of choosing 720p or 1080i thru HDMI. It would be suicide for these CE companies if they came out with a player that didn't support lower resolution displays.

Hey Diabolos, which TV do you recommend that can do 1080p through both Component,HDMI, and VGA?

Also what settings are best in order to get the best possible picture?

I want something that can output 1080p for my Xbox 360 and my PS3.I've read that the 360 can only output 1080p through VGA and not component which I think is true because I tried it out on the 6187W Sammy and it didn't work on Component.I don't have a VGA cable for the 360 so I couldn't try it out.

To my knowledge the 360 can output 1080p over Component Video with the latest firmware upgrade!

Wikipedia (1080p conformation):

As for best TV I will get back to you on that...

Yeah my 360 is up to date as far as Firmware but I still couldn't get 1080p when I selected it on the 360 's Console settings.I am using Component cables made by Microsoft.Maybe since they are the components when the 360 came out they don't support that high a resolution?

Well I just checked out the Component cables from Microsoft's site and they do support 1080p.Weird because it doesn't work for me.The highest resolution I get on the Sammy for the 360 is 1080i.

Okay, I recently acquired the Sharp XV-Z20000 1080p front projector. Pricey it may be, but after connecting my xbox 360 hd dvd drive to it via component i crossed my fingers and changed the hd dvd settings to 1080p. With the Optoma HD81, another 1080p projector which i returned because it has now lens shift, i got no picture and the hd dvd drive switched back to 1080i like it's supposed to. BUT, the Sharp gave me a picture. Does this mean I'm getting 1080p through the components with the Sharp? Because now my HD DVD movies, especially King Kong, look phenomenal - so clear that it is almost 3D. My screen is 120".
this has nothing to do with "planned obsolescence." It is purely content protection.
eh im pretty sure its both reasons.

the studios know they cant stop piracy so that i think is more of an excuse than a reason. think about it, how much of a demand was there for 1080p over 1080i? enough demand for everyone to buy new tvs in the name of helping the studios protect there precious content with the "hdmi only" policy? how convenient that they didnt start releasing hd and blu ray dvds until the third wave of "hd" technology came out (720p was the first, 1080i was second, and 1080p was third) after a load of people already had bought hd tvs.

they cant stop piracy, the movement grows by the day. so if they cant make any money from preventing piracy how else can they make money? by selling more tvs. its pretty hard to download or copy a tv.

well know exactly how big of a reason planned obsolescence was when they dreamt up the hdmi port only policy by how long it is until they only broadcast hd channels in 1080p and extend the hdmi only policy to hd cable boxes.
i have coxcommunications and there hd boxes only accept hdmi now in order to get hd tv on my HDTV is to go and buy one with hdmi sucks

Yes. Why do you question it?

---[Off Topic]---

HDMI is good. HDMI doesn't suck. HDCP is bad. HDCP does suck.

There actually was and still is a lot of demand for a unified connection format that offers some sort of copy protection. HDMI feels that gap, well.

Digital Rights Management (DRM) can suck, but only with copy protection in place will content owners feel ok about more advanced delivery options like the internet (i.e. VOD) or satellite (Digital Cinema). With everything being digital, copy protection is the only way forward.

As a Best Buy associate it really hasn't been a large problem for my customers. The movie studios are being nice about the whole ICT thing and the Broadcast Flag was shoot down in congress so I don't think we need to worry about any large scale DRM mishaps.

I'm not saying its not all about money, its all about money, and politics. But isn't this stuff fun. Maybe you have to do some research before you buy a tv now a days but thats only because you can get exactly what you want, not just what everyone else has.

My tidbit of info for this post...

The Government mandate (for the US) is coming up for all tvs under 25" and any devices with analog tuners:

I have the 61" SXRD TV and i've gota say i HATE IT. it's got a great picture but it doesn't accept 1080p through vga or component. I should've looked into more. The sales rep said it did. Not just a simple joe shmo sales rep but the Mongolia home theater rep. Anyway it only accepts 1080p through HDMI. so i'm going to try to call and get it replaced with a sammy once i confirm which model accepts 1080p through VGA. i don't care that it doesn't accept it through component that's why i got the VGA cable but i think vga is analog too right? i'm not sure but samsung's manual says the PC input resolution is 1920x1200 so that should work i guess. anything would be better than 1300x768 or whatever... stupid sony. I wanted to connect a PC to it too, you'd only get 1900 res through HDMI also!

So has anyone confirmed which TV model exactly has 1080p work on VGA for the 360? After i get Vista and stream my HD videos to my xbox i want the full quality...

I tried to ask the guys on DL.TV but they haven't responded to me yet. They had an episode displaying a samsung rear projection DLP tv connected to the xbox 360 with component working on 1080p. gota get that model...

I am assuming you have the 60" SXRD? Actually, if you have a DVI-D or HDMI output on your video card, you can run full 1920x1080 from the computer to the Sony via the HDMI input.

I have heard, cannot confirm, that there are some timing issues with audio/video sync with 1080p through the VGA cables.

There are several models of SAmsung sets that accept 1080p through component and VGA. Check the samsung website for specs.

Sorry for the lateness of my reply,

Flat Panel

Plasma: Pioneer (all of them)

LCD: Samsung (40" plus)

Rear Projection

DLP: Samsung (56" plus)

Not exactly. Sony's SXRD is considered a 3-Chip LCoS design. 3-Chip designs don't have color wheels (i.e. 3-Chip DLP).

JVC also has a 3-Chip LCoS design that they call HD-ila.

The Samsung 61" 1080p DLP has been ranked higher than the Sony 60" SXRD XBR-2 set at CES (2007). This year Samsung rules the rear projection market. Plus there tvs are the best things to display xbox 360 on since Microsoft did all of there 360 HD testing with Samsung video processors. Every Xbox 360 demo has a 23" Samsung above it for that reason!

Thank you so much Diablos. I am actually on the phone right now confirming which stores carry their HLS6187W model. Here's one thing that's confusing me. When I called in to confirm what they had. One store said they had the HLS6187WX model and one store said they had HLS6187W model. What is the difference? i tried doing research and found nothing. I saw the manuals for both and found no difference. I just want to make sure my xbox will work. everywhere i look says the W model will display 1080p through all inputs. I just wanted to know what's the difference with this "X" model.

And about what you said Samsung taking the projection TV market you were right. this TV is sold out on alot of stores. I have to take this Damn Sony with me to get the samsung today! luckily i have a Ford SuperDuty F-250. Thanks diablos.

How much of a difference does the 2ms response time from the SONY make compared to the Samsung's repsonse time. The best buy rep kept pushing Sony as the better TV for games because of response time? Since Samsung is the model Xbox mostly uses, does that not matter?

DLP mirrors have never had a problem with respone time so I will have to say that it isn't an issue. For that matter anything under 8ms will do (the response time of most LCDs last model year). Ask the Sony rep how fast their LCD tvs refresh!

The X is not a significant letter. Sometimes its printed and sometimes not, Samsung doesn't on their web-site. The official model number is HLS6187WXXAA. It can be found as HL-S6187W or HL-S6187WX.

Now to look for a better antenna for off air HD.

Awsome, I am happy to see you love your new tv. I kina knew you would since all of my customers have. In my store we have it in the center of the projection tv wall hooked up to HD-DirecTV, a samsung up-conver dvd player, and an HD DVD player (Toshiba HD-A2). When I show people how good this tv can look by showing them the King Kong trailer on HD DVD demo disc they end up buying that set, and an HD DVD player, pretty fast!

Quote:

First off, any TV antenna (VHF/UHF) will do. There is no such thing as an HDTV (only) antenna! The best ones to use are the old out-door antennas from the 70-ies and 80-ies (before cable became popular). But if you can't find those or you can't put an antenna outside then the best solution is an amplified indoor antenna. Some have radical designs that cost a lot of money but those are no better than the traditionally built models.

More than anything it depends on your area. Check out these sites for more details...

Antenna Web.org will you pick an antenna.

Titan TV.com is TV guide but better.
