Hello all.
I've been using Azureus for a long time, so I already know a lot about port forwarding and all that business. I just moved into a new place, though, and nobody is willing to drill a hole in my wall to set up an Internet connection, at least not until after the 1st of the year.
So, here's my question: let's say I'm using my laptop to steal the Internet from a nearby school. Well, hey, they're crazy for leaving their network open, right? Anyway, let's say that I can't forward any ports. Is there any advice anyone can give me regarding how I might be able to detect which ports are already open? Research into this matter has proved fruitless, and so I found this forum.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Well, let's say that you did that, then...
You don't stand a chance in hell of getting it to work.
Schools don't need to set up protection for their wireless, because the internal network will be tightly monitored and locked down.
So get yourself a drill and make the hole yourself, or wait untill 1st of januari.

Ah, yes... a wonderful diagnosis. I'd hoped that your bedside manner would be similarly thoroughgoing, but alas. That was a joke.
But seriously, it already works pretty well. I'm getting 100k downloads on *some* of the torrents, and the uploads are fine. As to your greater concern of whether or not I'm a cheapskate, you may rest easy this Christmas Eve Eve. I have every intention of getting an Internet connection. The hole was merely a red herring. I could do it myself, true, but what's the point in that? Especially since it means the cold wind of Denver will be creeping into my bedroom until January 3rd or so, when the techno-lackeys arrive to seal it up with cable.
Any other suggestions are appreciated. I'm sure there must be *some* way to tell if certain ports are open on a network so insecure. This school doesn't seem to mind that I get 160k downloads from subversive websites such as crooksandliars.com, so I seriously doubt they're on to me. Or else, as I assume, they just don't care. But it is difficult to admit that you don't know an answer to a simple question, which is why I'll leave my original question up to someone more qualified.
Thanks, doc. Again, just kidding.

Ah, well... there were so many freeware freebies there, and since it seems to be an Internet security site I wonder if I'm not being set up a bit for my snarkiness. No worries... I'm a paranoid freak, so I visited the link through a proxy. In the event that you were really trying to help me out a bit, which I assume you were, could you please tell me what program of those offered I should be most interested in?

It's not that i don't know *i work in network security business*, but we are not allowed to thoroughly discuss this kind of stuff here.
I'll give you one hint, and then you're on your own : look for a program called Nmap.
And i think TomMelee was trying to link to either xpdite or ID serve on the grisoft site.

No, no. Please don't take it personally. Not this close to Christmas. This is why I said I was joking. Because I do realize that you know what you're talking about, but I also realized at the time that you were reluctant to discuss particulars. Hence, the "it can't be done" response you offered. So, again, I apologize. I was merely trying to make light of the fact that, by giving me such a response, you seemed to be mistaking me for someone who doesn't know his you-know-what from a hole in the ground. I guess we're both guilty of a little snarkiness, but I should've been a little more specific. Thanks very much for the help, guys.

I didn't take it personally, just a little explanation as of why I think i do know what i'm talking about.
If i was offended, i would have reported this thread to the mods, and it would have been closed *because we REALLY aren't allowed to discuss this*.
Again, can't tell you more than i did in my last post.

Click "proceed" at the bottom. The next page mentions something about "open ports"...
