Hi, I have this weird internet problem. I have a normal WLAN broadband router that is connected VIA wireless to my computer which has Win XP Home SP1 with a Belkin Wireless card. I have no problems with it until a couple days ago. The following is my router stats:
QUOTE
Quote:
System
Uptime 37day:16h:11m:39s
Firmware Version v1.2.5
Wireless Configuration Mode AP
Band 2.4 GHz (G)
Channel Number 11
Associated Clients 1

TCP/IP Configuration

Attain IP Protocol Fixed IP
IP Address (Taken out for security reasons)
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway (Taken out for security reasons)
DHCP Server Enabled
MAC Address (Taken out for security reasons)

Now, this router has been up for about 38 days and had no problems until now. I am using Azureus (latest version) while surfing the web. On Friday, there wasn?t any problems. Downloading speeds is great (70 kbs to 200 kbs) and there is no unusual slowdown during web surfing.

Saturday afternoon is when things started to get a bit chaotic. At first, I could not surf the web while using Azureus (old version). I keep getting Connection has been Reset error on web pages. My speed on Azureus is still great. Getting 70 to 80 kbps. So I thought it might have something to do with my Azureus been old too. I upgraded it to the latest version but still didn?t fix the problem. Download speed decreased to less than 15 kbps with Blue or Red smilies on all torrents.

So I went and double checked my port-forwarding settings. I have port 55555 for Azureus and it is listed under port forwarding for both TCP and UDP settings. So it couldn?t be NAT error. In fact, the majority of the time I have a green sign for NAT but a yellow for DHT. It tells me that I have DHT firewalled or something. I did a Google search and didn?t find much information. It seems to have something to do with the latest version of Azureus causing some problems.

The weird thing is though if I restarted my computer and not use Azureus, I can still surf the web but at an extremely slow pace. Websites take forever to load and 50 % of the time pages turn up as Connection as reset or server not found and I have to refresh it for the page to actually load. As soon I load up Azureus, I cannot surf the web. I googled a bit but found no information on this weird problem.

So I referred to my old experience and remembered one time when I could download using Azureus fine but couldn?t use the internet. It had something to do with the DNS that my ISP provides. The solution that problem was to wait for a few hours and it will eventually fix itself. (Or I could use another better public DNS but that would kick off those are also connected to the router, something I don?t want).

So I shut down my computer for a few hours and came back at the night. Still the same problems and I could barely connect to my router page. 50% of the time I get connection has been reset and I have to refresh to get data off my router. Now, I noticed that under Associated Clients for wireless connection is a 2, which is kind of weird because I am usually the only one using it. I went the respective page for wireless connection on my router and checked him out. This guy is sending/receiving a huge amount of packets. At the time of checking, he had 20,000,000 packets sending/receiving. Whoever this guy this, he must be also using some sort of p2p program.

I wanted to kick him off but I don?t know who he is. He could be someone who rented a room here who brought a new laptop with for Christmas or something. So, I didn?t do anything and the guy disconnected at around 6 on Sunday morning. At first, I thought he was causing all the problems but even when he was disconnected, I still had the same problems. I left my computer on for the entire Sat night. I checked a couple times on Azureus and the speed never exceeded 20 kpbs. I had 7 torrents open with 3 active and the rest queued. Of the 3 active, only one is downloading 15 kpbs. The other two are either 2kpbs if I am lucky or just plain zero. They are all blue/red smilies.

I argued with myself that it might be caused by say trackers offline or something. My torrents came off Mvgroup, which had some problems this weekend so I guess getting blue for their torrent is pretty normal. But the rest of the torrents came off torrentspy and they are all red smilies. Some torrents would show (0)24 and (0)45 for seeds or peers while other just have 0 for all of them. This is kind of impossible because I know the trackers are very active and none of them are down. It must be some problems on my end.

About an hour ago I checked my Azureus transfer rate and it showed zero for all. Nothing is been downloaded nor uploaded. Before, when my downloading rate is a crawl, my upload rate is unaffected. It would still reached my max limit which is around 40 kbps. Now, everything is zero, is like my internet connection went down or something. So I checked my web and sure enough, I can?t surf the web anymore even with Azureus closed. I restarted my computer but still can?t surf the web. I took me many tries to just get on the router page. There gotta be a serious problem here. If my internet connection is off,I should still be able to connect to the router page. Yes, I can connect but it takes me about 5 tries. I keep getting connection has been reset etc?. I don?t know what?s wrong with it. I would really appreciate if someone can shed some light on this matter. All the ports need to forward are forwarded (TCP + UDP) and I have no software firewall at all. This setting has been working for a long time but now it is not working at all? My mom just recently brought a new laptop and on her machine it shows the wireless connection that I am using as Manual when before it used to say Automatic? (on Win Xp Sp2, if you click on the wireless connections tray. A window pops up with all the wireless conections available and it list each one with a small bar graph showing how good each connection and above it says either connected,or automatic. ) Does this hint at anything? Thanks.

Hey there :-),

I haven't read it all, but from what I understand you want to surf the net & download using bit torrent at the same time?

When your using Azureus your using a majority of your bandwidth, so when you try to browse you only have a small amount of it left free for you to use to carry other forms of information, hence the horrid speeds. A possible solution would be to simply lower the max download and upload so you can browse and download torrents at the same time (due to there being more free bandwidth).

You can also read the following if you wish to improve your speeds:

If you are using a router, please ensure that you have configured it to play nice with your BT d/l & u/l speeds, here are some
great guides on how to open and forward ports on your router:

*Step 1*

Router Configuration Guides

TUTORIAL: How To Open Ports and Forward them to your Router (By tEChniiQue):

*Step 2*

If you have a firewall installed, you must allow your BT client full access to the network via <Insert firewalls name here>. How to do this depends on what firewall you are using, information on how to do this is likely to be found on the manufacturers forums:

Kerio Forums

http://forums.kerio.com/

Outpost firewall Support Forums

http://www.outpostfirewall.com/forum/

Zone Labs User Forum

http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs

Sygate Product Forums

http://forums.sygate.com/vb/

If you have Windows XP firewall installed, I recommend you disable it (via Control Panel Security Centre) and use one of the firewalls listed here:

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/292257

Windows firewall has no outbound protection, meaning a full software firewall will prove much more effective.

*Step 3*

Download well seeded torrents, seed's are people who have the full file and are distributing, leech's/peers are people who are acquiring the file, the more leech's the slower the speed as the seed can only upload xxxyyyzzz amount at one time, the greater the upload & download speed of the seed the faster data can be transferred, a torrent with 100 seeds and 500 peers will go very slow, as there are more people trying to download the file than share it, meaning less data can be uploaded to the peers as there is more to share it with.

A torrent with 200 seeds and 10 leech's will go very fast! as the seed can upload more to xxyyzz person as there is less people to share it with.

Please tell us the amount of seed's and leech's on the torrent!

*Step 4*

If you have Windows Service Pack 2 installed, you'll need this:

Install the LvlLord Patch

http://www.lvllord.de/?lang=en&url=downloads

Windows will prompt you with a pop up telling you system files are being altered, ignore this, click cancel, also your Anti Virus may alert you telling you this patch is a virus, its not! so ignore that too :-)

*Step 5*

If there still slow, its possible your ISP is capping your BT download & upload speeds, you need to call them and ask them how they feel about "Peer to Peer file sharing programs" and whether they have placed any caps, it may be worth you checking out this guide if so:

Hi, thanks for the response but none of your solutions apply to me.

1. Yes, I do want to surf web and download at the same time. I understand that the web experience may not be the best but it shouldn't time out and get Connection has been reset error messages in Firefox 50 % of the time. I have been using bittorrent for 3 years and it has never happened that BT could affect web surfing so much.

2. I am using SP1 so the SP2 patch doesn't apply.

3. I don't have a software firewall

4. I know the caps with affecting DL etc.. I have limited them a long time ago. Upload is set to max 40 kbps. Download is set to 0 but this shouldn't affect anything since I am barly getting 20 kpbs.

5. Now my internet is totally screwed. It won't even connect to web sites anymore. All I see is timed out errors and connection has been reset 100% of the time. I can not even connect to my router page. i am getting the connection has been reset error in FF.

6. My ports are already forwarded, like a long time ago

7. All the torrents are good. Its not a matter of how many seeds. I can't even connect to one of them.

There is gotta be something wrong with the router. Just have to figure out the cause of it I guess. Could having the router running for 38 days without restart be a cause?
