Please help me. This is my first post ever. Not really a newbie to DVD backups but lately Nero 7.5.9.0 fails about 80-85% of the time and I use Verbatim DL DVD+R. I also use AnyDVD 6.0.9.9 and have the latest version of firmware for my external dvd burner for my laptop connected thru usb 2.0 pcmia card. I mostly copy 'on the fly' and just do 1:1 backups at the lowest speed 2.4x

My dvd external recorder is (1:0) E:\TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S162L
and dvd in laptop is (0:1) D:\HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4240N

I am always getting some sort of error or freeze or something that causes Nero 7 to fail the burn process. I have all my DMA settings enabled and ON. I am not running other programs in the background, disabled NAV, and am not multi-tasking or anything.

I have uninstalled Roxio 5 and any and all traces of any other burning software other than Nero. So where I stand now, I have uninstalled Nero 7, uninstalled AnyDVD, run CCleaner, rebooted, etc.
Reinstalled Nero 7, reinstalled AnyDVD and have attempted 2 backups. The first was of American Pie Naked Mile and was successful. Under options I was able to set it to DVD-Rom for booktype. The second backup I attempted was the first disc from the 4th season of South Park, and it failed. I had an 'Unrecoverable Read Error at LBA 2120288'. I have had similar errors with Nero/Anydvd on other disc backups and have run the latest VSO inspector on the source disc and had no errors. It is something with Nero 7. With the failed backup of South Park, I noticed that under options the only thing shown was a checkbox for DVD high compatibility mode but did not have Book Type settings or the drop down?!, so I thought that was weird and have had that problem a few times before.

I have also tried backing up from E: to E: so I write to my hardrive first and then to the burner, in case my source drive had a problem or something, and Nero 7 has also failed many times that way too, so it is not just 'on the fly' backups.

Also, I have been using NeroExpress (or Nero Start Smart and then copy DVD), but have also had many failed coasters in NeroBurningRom as well as Nero Recode.

So, I am baffled at what is causing the conflict or what the problem is that I fail so many burn processes. I really like Nero and the successful backups have great quality, but I am starting to think of trying Roxio 8 or ImgBurn or something.

Also, I have noticed on other posted examples of Nero Infotool results, that it lists the DVD drives and under each one it said something like DMA enabled; mine just lists my 2 dvd drives but nothing underneath each one, so I didn't know if that had anything to do with the problem.

I will now post the first Nero log of my successful back followed by the 2nd Nero log of the unsuccessful backup. Thank you in advance for all your help. I think I have covered the important details but let me know if I am missing something.

Also, this seems to only happen on DVD recordings, not Data, or Music. And I primarily use DL DVD's; I have tried single layer DVD+R and don't recall having the problem with those. I just do not care for compressing my movies so I therefore only use the DL discs.

Do you remember if you did a Book Type change on the failed burn? There are several differences in what happens in that area (starting around line #20), but it might be for that or some other reason.

Saltgrass,

It did not have the option to booktype on my 2nd log failed burn. It usually has it under options but it did not exist this time and only had a checkbox for dvd high compatibility mode??!

As far as bitsetting this usually has to only be done once. Many drives now do this automatically, yours is one of these.
Quote:
Samsung's new DVD writer also supports a feature called "bitsetting". The SH-S162L automatically sets the book type of DVD+R, DVD+RW and DVD+R DL media to "DVD-ROM" without any input from the user.
To see if it's a Nero problem grab DVDDecpter and use the ISO-> Read, ISO-> Write Mode choosing the MDS file for the write.

You might also want to look into ImgBurn as many feel this is the best bet in DL burning.

I am also having a problem with Verb DL with the V, 7. I have never had one coaster with DL Verbs using V,6, have gone through a hundred of them fine but the first 2 with this new version come up as an error for bad media??? Verb LiteScribe's no prob only the DL.
