I am totally new to DVD ripping. Just got a computer with a DVD writer for Christmas (YEAH).. Do you have to use dual layer dvd+r's to burn dvd's? I just want to back up copies that I have and didn't know if you had to have those. If I would have known I wouldn't have bought the ones I got the other day!! Thanks for your help.

It depends on your source material and the quality and/or extras you want to retain. Here's the deal:
DVD-5 can make a perfect copy to a DVD-5 (4.7 Gb disc, cheap)
DVD-9 can make a perfect copy to a DVD-9 (8.5 Gb, DL disc, expensive)
DVD-9 MAY be able to make a perfect copy of the main movie only to DVD-5
DVD-9 MAY be able to be split among 2 DVD-5s
Bottom line is, when copying from DVD-9 to DVD-5, something's gotta give. You will not be able to make an exact copy. You may have to compress (sacrifice quality), split the movie among two DVD-5s, or eliminate extras, and possibly a combination of those.
BTW, since you're new to burning, read my sig line about media and burn speeds.
-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

no you don't have to use DVD+R DL
you can use

DVD+R
DVD+R DL
DVD-R DL
DVD-RW

With the right software (ie, DVD Rebuilder, CCE), you can make "visually" perfect copies going from DVD-9 to DVD-5 without having to split to 2 discs or settling for "main movie only." Personally, I don't care much for extras, commentaries, etc. I've used this combo to back-up a 4 hour episode disc (DVD-9) to a DVD-5 with OUTSTANDING results... I view on a 52" widescreen HDTV.

Unfortunately, no. I really wish that were true. Even DVD-RB/CCE with 4 passes can seriously bobble at as little as 20% compression. I've seen it mostly in animated stuff, which has lots of scene changes. If you really want to retain quality, compression should be no more than 10% if at all. But, sure, extras and extra language tracks are mostly BS and that can usually buy you enough freedom where you don't have to compress or you can keep it in the single digits.

ProCoder2 is recommended for animation, or, CCE with the appropriate matrices...
