This may be beyond the scope of this forum but I haven't had any luck as far as getting anyone who knows definitively an answer to all these questions.

I have alot of German dvd's that I can currently only watch on my computer because they are PAL and they are euro region coded.

I have a home theater system that consists of a denon 2900 dvd player, a Focus Enhancements CS2 scaler and a 9" CRT projector. I'm almost 100% certain the projector and the scaler don't care if they are receiving an pal or an NTSC signal since they are like computer devices and can do various resolutions and refresh rates. (That's the difference between PAL and NTSC right? the resolution and the refresh rate?) I don't know if my denon dvd player can handle an pal disc without a region code or not - does anyone else?

If all else fails I can play these burned discs on my computer connected to the projector but I'd like to play them through the denon (so i can get the best dolby digital sound etc.).

I'm curious about the quickest easiest ways to make copies I can use normally of a PAL european region disc for:

1.) My projector
2.) My TV

I realize for the projector there should be an easy way to leave the discs PAL but for the TV I will have to convert somehow.

There may be a PAL / NTSC switch on the back of your DVD player, im not sure, or it may do it automatically. If you have a projector with a VGA input and your DVD player has Y, PB/PR, CB/CR connections, you should buy a cable to do it that way. The difference between PAL and NTSC is basically the frames per second. PAL is on 24.7999fps and NTSC is 29.0fps

Yeah, you're right. PAL is 25fps and then its NTSC that is 29.9777, was i not close :-)

There has to be something else because I always read PAL was slightly higher quality.

I wonder why the hell they would pick 25 instead of 24 if they were going to go lower frame rate since that's the speed of film

You are right, PAL has a higher resolution.

With the same given bandwidth, you will have more lines (or, if you prefer, pixels) per frame if you have less frames per second. PAL has less fps than NTSC, so no doubt it offers higher resolution.

Why the refresh rate is 25 and not 24 fps for PAL? Just because of standard frequency of household electricity used in Europe (50 Hz), all their TV video standards (they have SECAM as well, not PAL only) use 25 fps. I think they just wanted to reduce noise on screen without having to use expensive filters when they were starting their TV age. Otherwise, if your screen be 24 fps and your electric power be 50 Hz, you would see harmonic beatings on screen every second.

Most multisystem DVD players seen by mine had that switch in onscreen menu rather than on their back.

If you want the quickest easiest ways then I suggest the following.

Converting your movies from PAL to NTSC is doable but it is a headache, so if you have a pile of such DVDs you would prefer to buy an inexpensive device that can do it for you. And I have recently discovered such one and bought it for myself.

So, my advise is: buy Phillips 724, 726, or 727 Progressive scan DVD player (available in Wall-Mart and Visions; priced as if it is an ordinary player that understands no PAL), re-burn the same DVDs in PAL with removed region code limitation, and the player will convert on the fly PAL to NTSC for your TV or projector. I did not care about DSS, but as far as I noticed, the 724 does not support DSS, while 727 and maybe 726 do.

Hi brh996,

I can tell you how I tested it on Philips DVD players, and you can reproduce the same test on Denon.

I've created a video CD in PAL standard with use of my video editing program (I think you can use any, my one is Pinnacle Studio Deluxe), and this CD was played in various players. The DVD players from Philips (724, 726 and 727) had a setting in their menu, specifying whether your TV set is NTSC, or PAL, or multisystem. It is Multisystem by default, and then it plays PAL disc without conversion. When I have set this setting to NTSC, I was able to see a color picture on NTSC-only TV set.

Two other devices from Philips, both DVD/VCR combos, 741 and 750, did not have such a setting in their menu, however they were converting from PAL to NTSC automatically, I had just to insert the disc and push "Play", and a correct NTSC output appeared on screen. I mean, you are not to be discouraged if you do not find such a setting in your Denon's menu, just try playing, it may work.

Sorry, it was my typo, I meant 3D Surround Sound (it seems to me I have seen it sometimes referred to as Dolby Surround Sound, but you see, it was not lies when I said that I have never cared about the surround sound :-)

Some players will also play PAL if the region code is correct for their region, ie. my JVC will play PAL/NTSC for region 1. You can also just make the dvd region free if your player does the PAL conversion on the fly.

That tends to be the case for European DVD players, but i believe that DVD Players bought in USA may still have the Switch on the back of them. The only way to know is to look i suppose.

Also, since the introduction of 100HZ televisions screens 24fps would be possible, but not used. 24.977 is still the format that provides the better picture. If we move to Plasma and LCD televisions, the lines dont really matter as much, if the input signal is purely digitalised.
