what do i do with .torent files?

i got a .torrent file and now what do i do with it to activate it or whatever?

You need a client to open the file in; utorrent is probably the best (depending on opinion), BitTornado is good or Azureus if you like a lot of options. Opening the file will automaticly start your torrent downloading but be aware that speeds will be slow at first until you start uploading and depending on seeds/peers. There are other considerations such as if copyright law applies (Peer Guardian by Methlabs will protect you but isn't 100%) or whether you're behind a router in which case port forwarding will increase your speeds. Edit: if using utorrent, have the torrent file going to a seperate location from where the torrent is, for BitTornado, it doesn't matter and I am not sure on the others.

However I recommend you read RAV's excellent guide on torrents
and safety and security.

Nothing except whatever settings you choose. Right click on your torrent file and select open. The file will automatically open in BitTornado and begin downloading to where you chose.
