I've been using NeroRecode 2 for a long while now to backup my DVDs. The only problem I have is that it takes up a lot of space and a lot of files.

I just reformatted my hdd and was wondering which program to use to backup my DVDs. I don't have the time for DVDRebuilder (my computer is slow), so should I stick with Recode, or give another program a go?

Thanks A Lot!!

what are u trying to do ?
encoding/transcoding, or burning?
for me i use dvdfabdecryptor or ripit4me to rip to HD,then encode with dvdrebuilder + CCE or sometime recode2 (depend on the size of the movie) then burn with Nero or Imgburn.
i think if you want fast encoding then you better stick with recode2.

That's not 100% true. As long as you process the movies first, DVD Shrink is a great tool that does not take the room that Nero does. With the use of it and ImgBurn you can get the job done as long as the file is decrypted first.

Edit: There is also another tool that you can use called RipIt4Me. You can download that along with some other programs and burn with DVD Decrypter. 99% of the time I get very good results out of it. You can find it here: http://ripit4me.org

Good Luck!

I use Shrink for 80% or above. DvdRebuilder for below 80%. Yeah there's a big difference in time each program takes, but since I only back'em up when I can afford to buy them(which isn't very many) those that I use Rebuilder on I start when I leave for work or when I go to bed. When I get home or get up i've got a fresh backup to watch. Lately i've been using RipIt4Me to rip to the hd. None of these programs take up alot of space.

We never stop learning.

I usually rip movie to my hdd with DVD Decrypter + AnyDVD, then encode and burn with Recode 2.

I mainly just backup the "Main Movie" because I do not need the extras, etc.

I'm looking for the best program that will encode with the same quality as Recode 2.

@liquidsli........if you're having success with Recode... and you are comfortable with it.... keep using it! RipIt4Me is great too..... you can use it to rip any movie out there and then use Recode on it, instead of Shrink. Shrink is good but Recode is better (only because it's newer--- from the same developers of Shrink). Download the programs and follow the guide:
http://my.afterdawn.com/alkohol/blog_entry.cfm/1417
but if you want the best quality you can get then use Rebuilder.... but you said you don't want it so there's no use trying to convince you. Use what works for you! and happy burning HAPPY NEW YEAR!

@liquidsli

This is a multi-post which you asked this question here...

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/443161

I was reading the thread and new I had replied to this and thought my post was deleted and was about to message a MOD to find out why. Which I then found the other thread. This is why it is not cool to multi-post in different forums.

I will again give my opinion in this post as I did in the other post. Changing the program is not going to change the fact that whatever program you use the program will place the files into a TEMP Working folder.

The only way you could save space on your HDD is to buy a program like AnyDVD and run it during the transcoding processes of Recode2 or whatever program you use to transcode the DVD. This will skip the step of ripping the DVD to your HDD saving space that way. But the DVD will still be placed on the HDD in a TEMP work folder on whatever program you use to transcode the DVD. There is no way to skip that process.

As to the size difference between DVD Shrink and Nero Recode2 is there that much of a difference in program size?

Here is a nice comparison I found between DVD Shrink and Nero Recode2.

Using the below system...

System Specifications Used for Testing:
Pentium III 933MHz
512 MB RAM
80 GB Hard Drive
GeForce IV AGP Video 64MB.
Windows XP SP2

DVD Shrink total transcoding time was:03:06:00
Nero Recode Transcoding time was:01:43:48

I choose that link because you said you had an older computer. For more information look at the link below.

Plus I will agree with what IHoe said if you want quality then DVD Rebuilder with an encoder is the way to go.
