Hi
I don't know whether this is the right place to post this question or not, but I really need some basic help.

Up until recently I was using a basic burning program called Sonic Recordnow 6 to archive wav. & photo related files. I got it on my Dell computer when I purchased it several years ago. It started having a number of record errors over the last year and I thought that it might be the result of my software being out of date. I have since come to find out that this whole company is now called Roxio and worse, the programs they offer do not feature the one feature I needed most from SRN 6. This was the Recordnow 6 feature that allowed me to "key" information for specific "project" discs. When I say "key", I mean that the various project discs could be identified via a file name that I gave them and later, after the stored files that had been burned onto each project disc were deleted from the computer hard drive, I could still go back to the "key" and determine what was on each disc. You can't do this with the newer software because once the files have been moved or deleted, there is no record preserved of what was on each separate project. How STUPID is that!? There might be 100s of files in the form of wav. or photo related files, and without this key feature you would have to write out the entire mess every time manually.

Is there a freeware program that allows for this type of key preserved archiving? If not, are there programs that those here might be familiar with that I can purchase and will preserve "key" information for specific projects after the files have been deleted from the hard drive?

Thanks,
Frustrated

Ok, I can't help you with your Sonic Recordnow problem, sorry for that. But in general terms I'd definately encourage you to get away from relying upon any specific backup software to archive your data.

If you want to archive files (wav, mp3, jpg, video, whatever) you shouldn't need to use specialized backup software. Just backup your files, as they are, to a DVD or whatever destination you want. Organize the data storage yourself. Don't let any software do it for you.

I don't know how the "Sonic Recordnow 6" software archived your files using its special "keys". That's the downside of letting someone else's software manage your data. They're in control, and if they upgrade, change or go out of business, then you're out of luck.

If it was me, I wouldn't be searching for other propietary software that used "key preserved archiving" or any other special methods to backup my data. I'd organize and backup the data simply and cleanly myself, so that I could always easily restore it. Just my opinion.

I think you may possibly be misunderstanding what I am doing. I apologize for bringing this all up on a forum that is primarily movie centric. I just don't know where else to ask and do apologize for not being clearer.

This is the process that outlines my specific archive needs. I am an audio archivist primarily, although I back up and save all my movies to DVD+R as well. What I do specifically is collect vinyl, some very rare titles. These titles have never been released within a commercial CD reissue format. Each album is recorded in Wav. file form to the hard drive and then split up into songs later. Obviously there is a limited amount of space on any hard drive. I currently have about 350 gig and when I start to run out of room, I back up and burn many gigs of wav. files to the DVD+R medium in a lossless format. These discs are then stored and retrieved based on my personal needs to do so. I have several hundred of these discs currently filled with rare material. With respect to this previously described system via Sonic Recordnow 6, I would have the option when the disc burn process completed, to save the project. At this point I could "label" each disc individually and would do so via brief abbreviated descriptions and dates of my specification. I could then delete the files from my hard drive and defragment to prepare for the next few weeks/months of archival activity. It's at this point that whatever/however comes into play. I must be able to go back "in" to "key up" and retrieve a basic list of stored data with respect to each disc's uniquely assigned "name" With the recordnow 6 I could do this. Now whether I do this via a specific software program or via myself, I MUST KNOW HOW to do that. I currently don't, so PLEASE help me out if at all possible. I am hoping to avoid time spent typing out text files to log or document what are on certain discs for future reference.

I think I have misunderstood your original post, so it it my apologies entirely.

When I need to backup data (WAV, MP3, MPEG2, AVI, VOB, TXT, etc.) my only concern is to copy the data to another storage device so that my data is then retrievable in a clear and simple way.

It seems that your backup needs are much more involved in terms of indexing and organization. Hopefully someone else has some ideas for you. Again, my apologies.

@SirV......if I were you I'd contact Roxio:
http://www.roxio.com/enu/company/contact.html
and ask them if you can possibly get RECORDNOW v6! they should be the ones to answer your questions about how you saved your projects and how you keyed up to retrieve your disk information! I'm sure they could answer your questions. they have a telephone # call them. I wish you luck.

Thank you for your concern and consideration. I hope someone here can help me.

Thanks!
