Hello everyone
I have a problem and help is much appreciated. I have ran out of ideas and was wondering if any of you could give me a possible cause to the problem as follows.
There is no power to my pc at all, no motherboard light, no sound, psu fan won't run. I have done the following, I have tried two other psu's including a new one, still same problem, I have disconnected all drives and still the same problem, I have removed and replaced the cmos battery, still no joy. I checked the board and the only thing that stands out is two of the capasitors near the processor are very rusty but no leakage. This pc was off for four months as I have been using another pc. I suspect I need a new motherboard but I am interested in finding out what the problem is.

I'd say a new motherboard if you have tried different PSU's to no avail. Its either that or something is connected wrong which may prevent the motherboard from getting any power. If it was working 4 months ago, I cant see why a motherboard would just die like that. Before you buy a new motherboard, retrace your steps and make sure everything is perfect, because you could go out buying a new motherbaord when the old one still worked :P

Thanks for replying both of you.
The capasitors on the top look a normal shape and they are not swelled from what I can see. All the other capasitors around the board are clean. There are four capasitors near the processor and two of them are very rusty but have no leakage or browning on the board. It looks as if the board has just died. When I last used it four months ago I didn't do anything that would effect it. I am suprised it just won't work. It is about 5 years old and it's a micro atx form. Could it be because the capasitors that are rusty? It's all very strange.

is the rust on the board or on the caps as most likely the caps did leak as there has to be water present on the board to rust the caps.

Without any doubt there is no rust on the motherboard at all. The rust is only on the caps on the top and side of them.I took all the on board components out with only the psu connected and the light on the motherboard still didn't come on. The board is clean maybe the the circuit on the board is damaged but I have no idea why. I am buying another board I must say this has really got me. There is no way moisture got in the case as I am always careful where I put my pc's. I can't see any stains on the board anywhere.
I was going to upload an image of the motherboard but I don't know if this site allows this, there no help on images.

Thanks ddp
I looked with a magnifying glass at the top of the caps and one of them looks very rusty at the top and it looks like there is a small hole or crack I can't be 100% sure but it must be. I am going to buy another board, this one I can't replace with the same one as there is not any places on the web I can find that sell QT 4SDM2 boards. Thanks again.

Where the graphics card is concerned, I assuming it is in the AGP slot, this can happen when you have the wrong graphics card pluged in. If the card is not compatible with the system it can fry due to higher voltage then the card should have. It could also be due to an overclocked sytem if you overclock.
Where the USB has been fried, you have checked this by reinstalling the drivers I assume,if the wiring was not right with the USB port this would have caused a short that made the unit kick in some fail safe measures. When this happens your unit will need to be reset either at a point of the motherboard or the power supply. You may have connected a defective device to the USB port that has caused this damage. Hope this helps.

Just an update to my mobo problem . I have now found out that what I thought was rust wasn't. It is the colour of rust like brown and on the caps, I have been told by a caps tech that the caps have leaked and that is why they have the brown substance on the top and side of them. He said that they don't need to swell up to be a prolem. The browning is leakage. My mobo was bought in about 2001 and this is apparently the year when some mobos had bad caps fitted.
I didn't know much about caps but now I know a little more than I did. The board itself is clean but the tech told me it would have happened anyway in time. Thank you ddp and others for your help.
