I had less trouble with Adaptec's Easy CD Creator in 1996, on my 2x HP $500 burner.

I wish Ahead would worry more about the competency of their burning software, and less about the infestation of every piece of media on my system.

No matter what operation I am trying with my Nero 7, whether it is burning a DVD from an image, or copying a DVD of home movies, or looking at it crosseyed and saying "Boo!", I get a message from Windows that Nero.exe has encountered an error and needs to shut down. Nero says that it got an "Unexpected Exception". As far as I can tell, it doesn't even spin the drive up. It just croaks.

This POS software is more tempramental than a Las Vegas drag queen. I have already followed much of the advice I've seen listed here. I removed an old Roxio installation, used "Roxio Zap", used the Nero cleaner tools, de-installed Nero, cleaned again, re-installed Nero, tried burning, more failure, updated, failed again, and all errors are exactly the same.

I wish I could return this, but CompUSA doesn't accept returns of opened software. Anyway, here is my log, should anyone have the slightest idea what transgression I have committed against the Nero Gods. Any advice, short of Santeria-like chicken sacrifices, is welcome.

Thanks,
Buzz

at a guess i'd say that this is your problem.

PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D1.08 ultra Port 2 ID 2 DMA: Off
CdRomPeripheral : PLEXTOR CD-R PX-W5224A1.03 ultra Port 2 ID 3 DMA: Off

You need to get your dma turned back on

Hello.

zeiram is correct about the DMA. Here's a guide for remedying the problem:

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038

Nero also isn't identifying the actual disk manufacturer which may be troublesome if you're using some el cheapo media. Good media is Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, and Made in Japan labeled Fuji and Sony disks.

You device map shows a bunch of drives:
Quote:
DiskPeripheral : WDC WD2500JB-32FUA0 atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: On
DiskPeripheral : WDC WD1200BB-00CAA0 atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: On
DiskPeripheral : Maxtor 4D080H4 atapi Port 1 ID 1 DMA: On
[DiskPeripheral : Maxtor 6Y160P0 YAR4 ultra Port 2 ID 0 DMA: Off
CdRomPeripheral : PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D1.08 ultra Port 2 ID 2 DMA: Off
CdRomPeripheral : PLEXTOR CD-R PX-W5224A1.03 ultra Port 2 ID 3 DMA: Off

Is it even possible to enable DMA on the DVD drives and the Maxtor 6Y160P0? Do you have that option in Device Manager? What buss are these three drives on? PCI?

I have a raid controller plugged into mine and don't have that option.

Have you ever had these drives working correctly?

BTW, I could not agree more:

Thanks laddyboy,
All those drives caught my eye. I've got a couple of fast hard drives on my raid setup and not optical drives.

Could that be the problem here? That's why I was wondering if it had ever worked. I had not seen this configuration before.

I would move the two opticals to Port 1 and the hard disks on Port 1 to Port 2 on the RAID and give that a try.

Thanks, guys. I did some more reading on the problem and discovered that there may be possible conflicts between the Promise controller card I have plugged into the PCI bus, and the nForce2 chipset on my motherboard. I moved the opticals to channel 2 on the motherboard IDE, and the problem was immediately eliminated.

The funny thing was that everything BUT Nero was reporting that the DMA for the drives on the secondary controller were on.

Thanks, again!
