I'm attempting to backup Oscar to a Maxell DVD+RW using Nero 7 and AnyDVD 6.1.0.2 but after it has analyzed and is about to burn it ejects my disk and gives me the "failed to open the file %s" message. I think this is my log file.

Hi 9letters
Here's some suggestions:
Update Nero to the latest 7.5.0.9a
Nero is just recognizing this as a generic drive - Connected to MMC as unknown drive with class-nr : 1
Drive is autodetected - recorder class: Std. MMC recorder
It's a newer drive and the update may help this.
Direct burning: true
Turn off burn at once. Let Nero save the file temporarily then it will start the burn.
CdRomPeripheral : COMBO IDE5232CO atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off
Turn DMA back on for this drive. If your reading from it may be playing into the error - if not still best to have all drives in dma mode. Here's a guide.
Physical memory : 247MB
Free physical memory: 63MB
Memory in use : 74
512mb in memory would be better - add some if you can. In the meantime 74% is in use so no multitasking and close any unneeded programs.
File 'Drivers\InCDfs.SYS'
InCD can sometimes cause problems - if you're not using it uninstall it and run the clean tool.
Give those a go and let us know.

Well I did the InCD thing and the DMA thing is on now.
I didn't have anything else running at this time (The only reason I did last time is cause I knew it wouldn't work) but getting 512 just isn't possible, I'm broke.
I turned off Burn-at-once.
As far as upgrading Nero...... 150 MBs on a 56k, are there any other avenues I can take? I'll do it but I really don't want to.
This has made progress though, the drive isn't ejecting the disk at me anymore! Here's the latest log file.

Yeah by turning off the disc at once it stopped as soon as it hit the read error - saves you from a burn failure.
Ok still getting the failed to read from file and the funky symbols after dma turned and burn at once turned off - here's 2 more possible causes.
Nero might have a conflict with the drive - this is where the update may help. But I can get ya on the modem bit.
So next suggestion
Even running AnyDVD in the background there are a few movies that it will fail on. Didn't think this was one but may be.
So try ripping 1st w/ DVDFabDecrypter then open those files in Recode.
Give that a go and let us know.

Glad you got it burned.
It looks like this was one Recode couldn't handle w/ AnyDVD.
I run into once in great awhile - then I just use Clone too :)
