I'm building a new computer with an amd64 x2 4600. When I installed the RAM I didn't press it down all the way. So when I tryed to start it I heard the dvd drive click on but then nothing. After messing with it for a couple minutes(not noticing the ram) I went downstairs to consult the internet. When I came back up twenty minutes later and starting looking at it again I noticed that my cpu and heatsink were extremely hot(like burning hot). Finally I notice the ram fix it try to start the computer but my monitor says "no signal"
So I guess the question is, can a cpu running for 20 minutes with no heatsink fry? Or is it just the ancient video card I'm trying to put in it?

20 Mins on a CPU with no cooling is a serious length of time.
Chances are you've cooked it.

does the computer start, but just have no picture on your monitor?
You can always hope that you did not fry the CPU and look at other things first. Like the video card, or possibly that you have to install monitor drivers or something like that.

I hope the CPU is ok or that will be a mistake costing you between $200 and $250

Its done for. you may still be able to return it if the chip is sold as
retail. If its OEM ,then tough luck.

No one can give you wiser advise than yourself.

P.S If its RAM, then you might have fried the mother board.
I remember when i tried to mount some ram on a old computer, i
did it incorrectly next thing i knew i smelled smoke from the back
of the PSU.

old PC Specs-

350 Mhz PII
Legend QDI Main board with 8 megs video memory
256 megs of memory tried to add 128 MB extra memory memory

No one can give you wiser advise than yourself.

Alright well i went and bought a new graphics card today. Put it in and the monitor came on. I went in to the bios was just looking around and within about a minute the computer just died. When I try and turn it back on, all I hear is the dvd drive and none of the fans are coming on. When it was in the bios though it did detect what my processor was. So I'm not sure what to think now. Is it more likely the motherboard or the processor. Im using a 360w power supply(but its old ).
