OK, I have the network set up(Direct) and can ping the Xbox.
If I connect with FileZilla I get the following:

in order to get some help you are going to have to list your settings
on the PC and Xbox along with your FTP program.
Without those there is no way to tell if something is off.
and when you say direct i assume you mean you connect to the PC and not through a router.
also, did you ever have working FTP before?
And what type of ethernet cord are you using (strait or crossover)
Is both the Xbox and PC set up static?
Yes they are connected directly (Xbox to PC - no router)
They are both static and using a crossover cable, The PC is set up as:
IP: 192.168.2.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
The Xbox is:
IP: 192.168.2.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1
I have tried it in Filezilla, FlashFXP, and Internet Explorer.
As I have said earlier - I dont think the network is the problem, as my computer can ping the Xbox (this means the Xbox is connected to the PC correctly) and also (if you look in my first post) FileZilla managed to connect and communicate with the FTP up until it had to list directories when it errored.
This tells me that it is possibly an error with my FTP Clients setup(although i've used 3 so i cant see what it could be) or a problem with the FTP server on the actual XBox.
The XBox gateway is 192.168.2.1 sorry - typing before thinking
The reason I use 192.168.2 instead of 192.168.1 is that I already have a network running on 192.168.1 - This is not the problem however as I have tried disabling the network and using 192.168.1.* for the XBox with the same results.
And I have never had it working before, this is my first try.
maybe that will help. It sounds like you have some networking skills so i am sorry if my answers sounded basic.
But even though you can ping the Xbox, there is a problem in your network. A few other possibilities.
1. you may have to set up network sharing on the connection you are using for the Xbox.
2. you are using the password and user name of "xbox" in your FTP programs?
3. i also assume that you entered all of the settings into the Xbox like the DNS addresses?
4. do you have any firwall or antivirus program that could possibly be blocking you from making a true connection?
